This cache is located on a Scheduled Ancient Monument and World
Heritage Site. Extreme care must be taken when looking for this
cache, do not leave the main paths.
This geocache has been placed with permission of Central
Scotland Forest Trust. Historic Scotland are also aware of the
location.
Recommended parking is at the
Falkirk Wheel.
There are a number of well-signposted routes, leading from the
Falkirk Wheel, all of which allow you to experience the woodland
and to reach the Antonine Wall and Roughcastle Fort remains. Please
keep to the paths when exploring the area.
As well as the enjoyable woodland walks available, this site is
on a fantastic location next to the Falkirk Wheel and the remains
of a Roman fort at Roughcastle. The Falkirk Wheel is an exceptional
feat of modern engineering and is the only rotating boatlift in the
world. It has re-connected the Forth and Clyde Canal and the Union
Canal and is situated in a natural open amphitheatre close to
Falkirk. The visitor centre is well worth a visit and boat trips
are available for all the family.
The Antonine Wall is the largest relic of Roman occupation in
Scotland and, although it is one of the smallest on the Antonine
Wall, the Roughcastle Fort is probably the best preserved. The
earthworks of its rampart and ditches are still clearly visible
and, although the site is grassed over, this impressive landscape
gives a vivid impression of what a Roman frontier must have looked
like 2000 years ago.
The cache is a medium-sized plastic box. You will not need to
disturb the surrounding area to access it, or leave the path.
Please rehide it very carefully in the same location.
