Poweshiek County is a county located in southeastern part of the U.S. state of Iowa. It is named for the Indian chief of the Fox tribe who signed the treaty ending the Black Hawk War.
Mahaska County was formed on February 17, 1843. The county has been self-governing since February 5, 1844. It was named after Chief Mahaska of the Iowa tribe.
Keokuk County was formed in 1837. It was named for the eponymous chief of the Sac Indians, who advocated peace with the white settlers.
Wapello County was formed on February 17, 1843. It was named for Wapello, a Meskwaki chief. During the Black Hawk War, Wapello supported Keokuk.
Appanoose County was formed on February 17, 1843, from open territory. It was named for the Meskwaki Chief Appanoose, who did not engage in war against Black Hawk, advocating peace.
