lighthouselady: I guess it is time to let Mary rest in peace. The cache is gone, litter was scattered about and extensive storm damage has broken the fence. I enjoyed discovering this site and sharing it with you. If someone else would like to have this one and do the necessary repairs you may.

When approaching this site you will see “No Trespassing” signs. Since this road is county property, we met with people in three different county offices to determine that it is acceptable to use the road. The statement we received is; “This site is of historical value and those signs do not apply to you if you are visiting the cemetery.”

April 8, 1842 - Mary was born on a farm about a mile from the Missouri River between St. Joe and Kansas City. She was the daughter of Josiah Viah (Vale) and Permelia Westfall Edwards
1860 – Mary married Jacob Cogdil and moved in a covered wagon to Brownsville Neb. Here she had 2 children, William and Josiah.
1864 – The family started west. They stopped for a time in the Willamette Valley in Oregon and in Portland, OR. In 1865 she had her 3rd child, Maggie Bell. They moved on and settled in the Hanaford Valley in the Washington Territory in 1866. Here Mary's 4th child (a daughter)was born.
1871 – Mary died January 19, 1871 of scarlet fever or diphtheria contracted the previous fall.
Mary’s 6 year old daughter, Maggie, cared for her father and brothers until her father remarried when Maggie was 16.
There is uncertainty as to whether Mary is the only person buried at his site or whether her younger daughter, who also died of diphtheria or scarlet fever, is buried here with her mother.
