Geocache Description:

A nice scenic spot in downtown Monroe.

This is part of a series of caches sponsored by Green County Tourism.

Learning lessons both from the earliest courthouse project and having seen many downtown structures destroyed by fire, the county spent $52,390 to construct a brick building rather than a wooden frame structure. A local newspaper correctly prophesized that the additional expense incurred to purchase brick and stone would ensure the longevity of the courthouse. This is evidenced by a solid structure, still home to many of the same county government offices originally placed there more than 100 years ago.

An estimated 5,000 people traveled by horse and buggy to attend the dedication in August of 1891. Festivities included placement of a cornerstone, and musical entertainment by the Monroe Cornet Band, plus a chorus of forty singers. The keynote speaker, Senator Vilas, emphasized the importance of “building well the temple of justice.”

Just as witnesses have testified in the courtroom, the courthouse building itself can testify to a host of stories including hearing the original carpenters warned to not spit tobacco juice on the floor as they worked, watching German painter Franz Rohrbeck create the two murals in the courtroom, seeing the excitement of the crowd gathered for the dedication, and witnessing the placement of a new time capsule at the celebration of its 100th anniversary.

Today, numerous festival and events are hosted on the grounds, with the Green County Courthouse proudly serving as a picturesque backdrop to Monroe Main Street and a thriving downtown business and shopping district. Since 1891, the majestic Green County Courthouse has been the cornerstone of Monroe’s downtown square in southern Wisconsin – distinguished by arched porticos with polished marble pillars, windows with white granite block accents, and a bell in the soaring clock tower steadily marking the passing of time.
