G:UK cache rating
In 1851 Lord Hothfield created Hothfield Lake by damming the Pigs Brook stream that flows southwards into the Great Stour River. From his fine house at the northern end of the lake, Hothfield Place, which was demolished in 1954, he enjoyed fine views along this beautiful stretch of water. An elaborate ornamental bridge was built across the southern outflow from the lake above a small waterfall, but all that remains today is the waterfall. Over the next 150 years the lake gradually filled with silt, and soon rushes, willow and alder turned the shallows into marshy woodland. In more recent years the construction of the M20 and the Channel Tunnel Rail Link created huge quantities of mud, which washed down local streams and ditches into the lake and added to the existing silt, until in places the lake was less than 12" deep! In 2004 the Environment Agency dredged the lake and some 12,000 cubic metres of silt was removed and spread on the adjoining fields. The marshy woodland that had been created in the shallows over the years was left undisturbed as it provides a wonderful habitat for a whole range of plants and birds. AFTERNOTE: Do replace the cache with care and try to leave it at least as well hidden as you found it - and beware angling muggles! Also DO NOT leave objects that are too large for the cache as the lid will not fit properly.
