Geocache Description:

Enjoy a scenic drive through bucolic ranch country and then rattle along a short section of authentic washboard road to learn a few facts about the old west. There's a perfect parking spot for your means of transportation but do park well off the road at this blind curve. Please replace everything properly and leave no soilers nor hints. Remember, it’s not nice to mess with a cowboy cache.

The history of the old west is filled with sorrowful tales about the natural conflict between cattle ranchers and sod-bustin’ nesters. Cattle ranchers expected open range for cattle herds and nesters wanted fenced fields for sheep, taters, and corn. It should come as no surprise to learn that San Diego County ranchers and nesters of the 1800s had their fair share of spirited conflicts. Old conflicts do die hard as they pass along from generation to generation. The attitudes and personalities of present-day ranchers of this area still reflect the no-nonsense culture of the old west. This cache is placed so that you can view the spot where, in the 1800s, an actual showdown took place between cattle ranchers and a family of wood-be nesters. The old conflict was rooted in the desire for the plentiful waters of La Posta Creek. Not surprisingly this self-same conflict still ranges on over the now meager flow of the creek that runs through Sandy Creek Ranch and on toward the back-country reservoirs. Well water is the life force of the final few ranches that dot San Diego County. One day the wells will run dry and all of the crusty old ranchers of San Diego County will simply fade away. That will be a tragic loss of a colorful history. This cache container will encourage you to see the nester’s point of view and, perhaps, even appreciate how hard it must have been to hide your meager poke where nobody could easily find it. Hitch up your britches and mosey on out into authentic ranch country. Pretend for a moment that you are an old-time nester and see how it feels to nest for a moment. By th' way, don’t forget t’ have fun. The Sandy Creek Cowboys
