Geocache Description:

Along the way to the Goolwa Barrage.

Goolwa Barrage

The barrages were built in 1938 and completed in 1940 as a means of controlling the River Murray to stop floods and times of low water. The Goolwa Barrage was completed in 1940 at a cost of £700,000. These days the barrages are keeping the sea water out of the river system due to extremely low fresh water in the River Murray due to drought and over water allocation upstream. There is a many rescue plans being discussed with mentions of temporary weirs at Wellington or Clayton, more water being released into the river upstream and also opening the barrage to flood the Goolwa basin with sea water to bring the levels back up. Currently the Goolwa Barrage is exposed to the river bed on the Goolwa side due to lack of water.

The Goolwa Barrage is open to visitors from 8.00 a.m. - 5.30 p.m and is worth a walk out. The SA Water grounds are a pleasant spot for a picnic lunch and have a photo display on the construction of the Goolwa Barrage.

The cache is not in the barrage grounds but a short distance from it.

You can park off road close to the cache. Please don't destroy the vegetation looking for the container, it isn't that hard to find and make sure it is concealed again before leaving the hiding spot. Tread lightly upon the earth.
