GC4A Who was Bob C? (Canterbury) Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Kiwi Nomad: I was in Christchurch for the morning and as we were returning home at a reasonable hour we made the small detour with the replacement cache. Unfortunately the area looks like it is being developed so is no longer suitable for a cache. The fence used to be a distance from the road edge but now there is an electric fence right beside the edge of the gravel road. I didn't feel comfortable going under so can't really expect others to.

Geocache Description:

"History never repeats ..... " Yeah right!

I thought I had read everything I could on early caches in NZ then one I found the cache page GC4A by accident and I have yet to see any information on it before. So that this doesn't disappear into history forgotten I decided to come and place one here.

Multiple approaches for this cache. While checking out the location a convey of 4wd drove by following Selwyn 'River' (which for nearly all the year is a dry river bed).

Cache update October 2007 Bob C has a new name and he has found this cache!!! How great is that. Any way I asked him how close I was to the original site and here is his reply:

Hi Catherine. The missus (Kaye) reckons the original was only about 2 or 3 meters away, on the same side of the 'road' (her memory is better than mine too) . It was placed at the base of a council signpost, with 'No Rubbish Dumping" (or something like that) on it. The whole area was inundated by the Selwyn river in the big flood, and the cache, signpost, and anything else recognisable were washed away out to sea. We enjoyed the search too, brought back memories of the original cache! I hoped at the time to be the first in NZ to do one, but 2 people in the N/Island beat us to it, oh well... Thanks for keeping the memory alive, it looks like your cache is going to be pretty popular. Incidental, when we found it, it was fairly obvious since the grass all around had been disturbed, and the concrete slab had been placed back on _top_ of the surrounding grass. So when we left, I artistically re-arranged it to look like it had lain undisturbed for years! Cheers, Bob -----------

UPDATE 5 DECEMBER 2008 New container. My first cache here was washed away in the same manor as the original GC4A. Do not remove cache from its obvious hiding spot just open both lids and remove log for signing. Feel free to add large stones to the outside of the larger cache container.
