Yahuarcocha Traditional Cache

The name Yahuarcocha have its origins in the Quichua language in which "Yawar" means blood, and "Cocha" means lake or lagoon. This lake was called formerly "Cochacaranqui", and is located just 4km north of the Ibarra city, the capital of the Imbabura province.

The so-called Yahuarcocha or "blood lake" was the scenery of an ancient battle between the Incas, with Huayna-Cápac as their leader, and the native indigenous people known as the Caranki-Cayambe-Pasto confederation. The battle occured in 1487.

Local legends tell that 30000 men died here, and the lake turned red when the battle occured. Current archaeological studies have found ceramic fragments and rests of bones belonging to teens and adults. These bones show overwhelming impacts that suggest body to body fights. However, the number of deaths remains undetermined.

According to the latest studies, Yahuarcorcha has a miminal age of 12000 years, and is a vestige of the postglacier age. The following are some interesting data about the lake:

• Surface: 257 hectares.
• Perimeter: 7970 meters.
• Maximum depth: 8 meters.
• Water temparature: 11ºC

Today there is an autodrome called José Tobar that surrounds the lake, and many shops and restaurants where you can enjoy the delicious local food.

Note 1: There is a $0.50 fee for access to the autodrome only if you enter using a car.

Note 2: Don't forget to bring your own pen. I'm sorry for the improvised logbook, so please be short or add more sheets if you can.

El nombre Yahuarcocha tiene sus orígenes en el lenguaje Quíchua, en el cual "Yawar" significa sangre, y "Cocha" significa lago o laguna. Este lago se denominó antiguamente "Cochacaranqui" y está localizado solo a 4km al norte de la ciudad de Ibarra, la capital de la provincia de Imbabura.

El así llamado Yahuarcocha o "lago de sangre" fué el escenario de una antigua batalla entre los Incas, con Huayna-Cápac como líder, y la gente indígena nativa que se conocían como la confederación Caranki-Cayambe-Pasto. La batalla ocurrió en 1487.

Las leyendas locales cuentan que 30000 hombres murieron aquí, y el lago se volvió rojo durante la batalla. Estudios arqueológicos actuales han encontrado fragmentos de cerámica y restos de huesos pertenecientes a adolescentes y niños. Estos huesos muestran impactos contundentes que sugieren luchas cuerpo a cuerpo. Sin embargo, el número exacto de bajas permanece indeterminado.
