Geocache Description:

The goal of this virtual cache quest is to locate the “grave” of Captain James T. Kirk of Star Trek fame. Some moderate rock scrambling is required. Look for the inscription “J. T. Kirk RIP”.

Star Trek fans and those appreciative of incredible views in an outstanding area will enjoy this quest. In the 1994 movie Star Trek: Generations, Captain James T. Kirk met his end on the planet Viridion 3 while battling the evil physicist Soran. His cohort in this adventure, Captain Jean Luc Picard, buried Capt. Kirk under a pile of stones and placed his insignia on top of the grave. Well, since this was, after all, a movie, you need not travel to Viridion 3 to locate the grave. Here on Earth, however, the pile of stones, the insignia, and even the body have all been removed. Soran’s elaborate metal structure is gone, as is the small tree placed next to the grave for scenery. The only marker for the captain’s grave is the inscription “J. T. Kirk RIP”, carved into the rock well after the filming. See the photo below.

In order to receive credit for finding the cache (and to prevent the deletion of your log), you must answer the following question (via email): What is the inscription that is situated immediately to the right of the Kirk inscription? Make sure that the answer is exact. Please do NOT post your answer with your log!

Finding the inscription may be particularly difficult at certain times of the day. When the conditions are unfavorable, the difficulty level may be increased substantially above that indicated above. Although there are numerous cliff faces in the area, as evidenced by the death of the good captain, accessing the cache requires no climbing skills or hazardous exposure. Be safe, stay away from the cliffs.

Sharp-eyed visitors will recognize the remnants of the structures built by Soran in the pursuit of his evil plan. You may find metal embedded in the rock or cement patches. Lying about are scattered fragments of the metallic construction.

In addition to the subject inscription, you will find many other inscribed graffiti. We did not inscribe the Kirk marker or any of the others. Please resist the temptation to add any other marks to this beautiful spot.

Please do NOT post answers to the question or photos of the site with your log.

IMPORTANT NOTE: In January 2006, three particularly dim-witted geocachers unsuccessfully attempted to hijack control of this cache page. Frustrated by their own fecklessness, they apparently decided to destroy the inscriptions upon which the puzzle for this cache was based. As stated above, we did not carve the original inscriptions and we will not do any further damage to this beautiful area by carving new ones. But, don’t let that stop you from visiting this outstanding location and logging this cache. You can still find the shallow depression where Picard buried Kirk. No need to answer any questions, just find the gravesite and log your find. But, if you want to see the Kirk inscription, it’s still here! Check out the photo below.
