O ponto mais alto do Pico do Castelo atinge os 430 metros de altura, encontrando-se quase no topo o busto de homenagem a Schiappa de Azevedo, que contribuiu fortemente para a arborização do monte, outrora mais desertificado, existindo também as ruínas de uma fortaleza do século XVI, símbolo da defesa das populações dos continuados ataques piratas à Ilha, durante conturbados séculos.

Esta arborização teve o seu início a aproximadamente 30 anos, encontrando-se ali actualmente uma opulenta vegetação de espécies arbóreas, que, ainda no mar e a grande distância, causa admiração do observador, em flagrante contraste com a aridez dos outros montes.
