Moncrieffe Hill belongs to the Woodland Trust, who manage and protect the Hill while encouraging public access and enjoyment of the area. There are some marked routes around the woodland, and there are plenty of smaller paths criss-crossing the hill that are well worth exploring too. If you have time to go to the Moredun Top on a clear day you’ll be rewarded with fabulous views down onto Perth, along the lower Strathearn valley, and the Carse of Gowrie to Dundee. There are remains of a Pictish fort both here and near the trig point further to the west.
Although this whole area is now covered in mature trees, it was actually treeless for several centuries after the ‘Forest of Black Ironside’ vanished. The woods you see today were planted in the 18th century when over 45,000 trees were planted for commercial and aesthetic purposes.
Enjoy the walk!
