Geocache Description:

Located by an abandoned lighthouse on a very remote island in Lake Michigan. About 6 miles from the nearest mainland. Bring your own writing instrument.

The Isle of Poverty and Treasure. BRING YOUR OWN WRITING INSTRUMENT - Warning!!! Only experienced adventurers need attempt this cache. It can be very dangerous. This cache was placed by 9 members of the Fortune Bay Expeditionary Team on a remote island in Lake Michigan (you can read about the "Lost Islands Expedition" at www.fortunebaycompany.com). The team performed the expedition in 2005 and the owner plans to attempt to maintain it every year. The Team kayaked some tough water (with a Rigid Inflatable Chase Boat). It is recommend that you have a fair amount of sea experience to try this one. Poverty Island is mostly State Forest Land, so you can LNT camp on the island, and you will probably need to if you don't use a seaworthy powerboat. The cache is located on federal land that is managed by the Coast Guard. Original cache contents include a FTF certificate, $64.00 US Dollars, and other various items. Take pictures and post them. Poverty Island is a 192 acre wilderness island with plenty of evidence of hunting. BE CAREFUL!! If you take a boat, then land on the east side of the island as the lighthouse side is typically battered by rough seas. There is an old boat landing hidden in the rocks, this landing was used to supply the lighthouse. Poverty Island is rumored to have many other treasures sunken around the island, including $400 million in gold met for the Confederate War cause. Recently, it is rumored that the first sailing vessel on the Great Lakes "The Griffin" was found near the island - which sank over 350 years ago. Again, only attempt if you are an experienced mariner, no one can be responsible for the unprepared that attempt this cache. Please rehide the cache as you found it. Thanks to aquaphoenix for battling the seas (solo) to find the cache and to fix it up a bit and make it whole again. (9-24-2010).
