Geocache Description:

This is a night cache that is located at Jefferson City's Ellis Porter/Riverside Park.

Enjoy a night hike through beautiful riverside hills and forests. This is a nice area that is appropriate for adults and children alike. If you bring young children along, please exercise caution and keep your children close by your side. One part of the trail will bring you to an area that overlooks the Missouri River. Bring a good flashlight and extra batteries. The route is a circular route that is marked from beginning to end and other than finding the start, you really don't need to use a GPS. The route is marked with different color reflectors - blue, green, yellow, white and red. All of the colors are meaningless except for the red markers. The red color indicates four things: 1. The start; 2. The finsh; 3. Caution areas; 4. The Cache.

1. The start: The coordinates above bring you to the parking lot where start and the first red marker.

2. The trail: Follow the reflectors along the trail, which is a borrowed deer trail through the woods. When you look for reflectors, make sure that they don't move! The reflector shining back to your might be a deer's eyes. The trail is fairly rugged. There is a lot of fallen timber around and a lot of underbrush. There is also an occasional sticker bush, so keep a close eye out to what you are walking through.

3. Caution: About half way through the route, you will come to an area that overlooks the Missouri River. This is marked with several red reflectors - PLEASE EXERCISE CAUTION IN THIS AREA! You will be on a hillside over the river and to the right side of the trail, the ground slopes steeply down to the river. It's not really what you would call a bluff, but it is a fairly steep hill. If you stay on the trail, right by the reflectors, you'll be fine.

4. The Cache: Somewhere along the trail, and I will not tell you where, are two red reflectors placed in the shape of a cross. This is off the trail about 50 yards in the woods, away from all the other markers on the trail. It's in an isolated area and you will only be able to see it from a short section along the trail. That marks the AREA that the cache is hidden in and you will have to look around to find the cache's hiding area. The cache is an ammo box full of all sorts of night-themed goodies. Please trade even or up at this cache.

5. The finish: If you keep following the reflectors, you will be brought back to the area where you parked your car.

The Jefferson City Parks and Recreation Department supports Geocaching and encourages you to find and hide caches in their parks. To find out more on their Geocaching Policy, please go to www.jeffcitymo.org/parks and click on the Geocaching link.
