Geocache Description:

The Charlottesville Area Geocachers Adopt-A-Highway CITO. This event will be to clean-up our section of Burnley Station Road (Rt. 641) from Coventry Lane (I-1004) to Burnley Road (Rt. 644). This is a new thing for the area cachers and will result in numerous events over the next year.

IF you miss this one...NO Worries....We will be holding them every 3-4 months....Look for the next one will be in October/November.....See you then!!!!!!! There will be a souvenir given for your profile for attending this event!!!!!

We will be meeting at 9:00AM at the Preddy Creek Trail Park parking lot. I would plan on it lasting approx. 2 hours.....

We will split up into two or more groups and each group will clean up a different section of road. The reference points are the different sections of the roadway. It is important when walking along highways to always walk on the right of way facing traffic. So each group will park at one location and walk up on one side of the road, and return to their car on the other side.

I have sets of coordinates published on this cache page and will have them with me so that each group can use their GPS to get to the correct starting point and know where to turn around and return to their car.

CONDITIONS FOR PARTICIPATION

Group members less than 18 years old must be supervised by adults 18 years or older.

Individuals under 10 years of age will not be permitted to participate. Each team should stay on one side of the road.

SAFETY TIPS

The Adopt-A-Highway Program promotes responsible behavior. All participants are asked to keep this goal in mind when conducting cleanups. Program requirements state that the following regulations must be shared with all members: Please review and discuss this information prior to conducting clean ups.

What to Wear

Always wear an orange safety vest so drivers can see you easily. Put on the vest before you leave the car so you are visible the moment you are on the side of the road.

In addition to the orange vest, wear brightly colored clothing that protects your arms and legs. Also wear hard-soled shoes and work or gardening gloves.

Wear heavy gloves when removing temporary signs in case there are sharp edges. If you remove signs attached to poles within the right of way, wear safety glasses and use an appropriate tool to do it safely.

During Pickups

Always put up or open the "Cleanup Crew Working" signs before cleaning.
Close the signs after you've finished the pickup.

Always walk facing traffic and stay with the team.

Take breaks, drink fluids and don't overexert.

Do not pick up litter in the road or close to the edge of the road.

Do not pick up litter on median strips unless you have received permission from VDOT's resident engineer to do so.

Do not pick up litter in construction or maintenance sites, in tunnels, or on bridges or overpasses. Leave that for VDOT.

Do not pick up litter or remove signs beyond your adopted section. Stay within the area marked by your safety signs.

Watch for snakes and poisonous weeds.

Do not pick up materials that appear to be hazardous. Contact the state police.
