Mitä solarigrafiat ovat?
Solarigrafiat ovat valokuvia joiden valotusaika on tavanomaisen
sekunnin murto-osan sijasta mitä tahansa yhden päivän ja puolen
vuoden välillä. Pitkän valotusajan ansiosta solarigrafiassa saadaan
auringon paistaessaan jättämä jälki piirtymään kirkkaana juovana.
Auringon mennessä pilveen, katkeaa juova tai jää kokonaan
piirtymättä mikäli koko päivä oli pilvinen. Solarigrafiassa
valokuvausmateriaalina käytetään valokuvauspaperia. Paperia ei
kuitenkaan kehitetä sille tarkoitetuissa kemikaaleissa, vaan
paperille jäänyt himmeä negatiivikuva skanattaan ja
jälkikäsitellään tietokoneella riittävän kontrastikkaaksi
positiivikuvaksi. Alkuperäinen kuva valokuvauspaperilla tuhoutuu
skannausprosessin seurauksena, jolloin ainoa pysyvä lopputulos on
kuvatiedosto.
Kätkö
Kätkö sijaitsee lähellä Lappeenrannan keskustaa.
Kätkön toiminta
Olen laittanut kätköön lokikirjan ja kätkötiedotteen lisäksi joukon
filmipurkkeihin rakennettuja neulanreikäkameroita. Toivoisin
kätköllä vierailevien kätköilijöiden ottavan mukaansa yhden kameran
ja ottavan sillä kuvan (tarkemmat ohjeet alla). Kun kuva on
valotettu, kameran hakenut kätköilijä palauttaa kameran takaisin
kätköön ja jättää merkinnän nettilokiin viestiksi minulle, että
voin hakea kameran pois ja jättää uuden tilalle. Voit myös
halutessasi palauttaa kameran postitse. Skannaan kuvia sitä mukaa,
kun kätköilijät palauttavat kameroita ja laitan kuvia verkkoon
kaikkien katseltavaksi. Kätköllä voi toki vierailla vaikkei kameraa
haluaisi mukaan ottaakaan. Luultavasti vien myöhemmin kätkölle
laminoituja kuvia kunhan niitä ensin muutama saadaan. Toivoisin
myöskin ettei kätköön jätettäisi mitään tilaa vievää tavaraa
(geokolikot ja muut litteät jutut ovat ok), jotta kätkössä olisi
aina tilaa kameroille.
Ohjeita kameran ottavalle kätköilijälle
- Tarkista ettei ottamassasi kamerassa ole merkintää josta käy
ilmi, että kameralla on jo otettu kuva.
- Kiinnitä kamera hyvin johonkin tukevaan alustaan, esim
lyhtypylvääseen, ikkunalautaan tai paksuun puuhun. Kiinnityksessä
voi käyttää esim ilmastointiteippiä tai rautalankaa. Kamerat ovat
säänkestäviä, joten sitä ei tarvitse ottaa mitenkään erityisesti
huomioon.
- Suuntaa kamera niin, että kamerassa oleva reikä "näkee"
auringon. Voit suunnata kameran esimerkiksi auringonlaskun tai
-nousun suuntaan.
- Kun olet kiinnittänyt kameran, poista "suljin" eli neulanreikää
peittävä musta teipinpalanen ja liimaa purkin kylkeen odottamaan.
Valotusaika olisi hyvä olla talviaikaan, ainakin kuukausi mikäli
haluat saada kuvaan auringon jälkien lisäksi myös ympäristöä.
- Kun valitsemasi valotusaika on kulunut laita teipinpala
takaisin peittämään neulanreikää.
- Liimaa purkkiin tarra tai muu lappu, johon olet kirjoittanut
oman kätköilynimesi, kuvan nimen (valinnainen), koordinaatit jossa
kuva on otettu (valinnainen), sekä päivämäärät jolloin valotus
alkoi ja loppui (valinnainen)
- Palauta kamera takaisin kätköön ja jätä nettilokiin merkintä,
jotta tiedän hakea kameran pois ja viedä uuden tilalle. Jos haluat
palauttaa kameran postitse, lähetä viesti profiilisivuni kautta,
niin saat osoitteeni.
- Jätän nettilokiin viestin aina kun olen "kehittänyt" kuvia.
Joten jos haluat seurata kuvien kertymistä tai saada viestin oman
kuvasi ilmestymisestä verkkoon, lisää itsesi kätkön seuraajaksi
("watch listing" -valinta).

What are solargraphs?
Solargraphs are photographs that have an exposure time of days up
to months instead of the usual fraction of a second. Because of the
extremely long exposure, the solargraph renders the motion of the
sun as a bright curve in image. When the sun gets blocked by clouds
the curve has a gap in it or the curve might be completely missing
if the whole day was completely cloudy. The photographic material
used is normal photographic paper. Instead of developing the paper
with suitable chemicals, the paper is scanned and the very dim
negative image is then post-processed with a computer to a positive
image with sufficient contrast. The original image on the paper is
destroyed in the process of scanning, so the only lasting end
product is the image file on the computer.
The cache
The cache is located near the center of Lappeenranta. It's hidden
to a relatively easy and secluded (atleast until summer) place to
allow easy visits.
How the cache functions
In addition to the usual stash note and logbook I've placed small
pinhole cameras made out of film canisters to the cache. I'm
challenging the visitors of the cache to take a camera with you,
expose a photograph (detailed instructions below) and return the
camera back to the cache (or to me via mail). If you return the
camera to the cache, you should make a note to the www-log of the
cache, so that I will know when to fetch exposed cameras and
replace them with unexposed ones. Once I get a camera back, I will
scan and the photos and put them on the net for everyone to see.
Naturally you are welcome to visit the cache even if you don't want
to take a camera with you. I will probably put laminated prints of
the solargraphs to the cache, so random visitors will have
something to look at. I wish that visitors wouldn't put any big
objects to the cache so that there would always be some room for
the cameras. Geocoins and small bugs are ok.
Instructions for visitors who take a camera with them
- When you take a camera, make sure it doesn't have tag
indicating that the camera is already exposed.
- When you've found the location you want to photograph, direct
the camera so that the pinhole "sees the sun". For example you can
direct the camera to either sunrise or sunset.
- Attach the camera tightly to a firm base for example a lamp
post, window sill or big tree. Duct tape and metal wire are good
materials for attaching the camera. The cameras are
weatherproof.
- When you've attached the camera, remove the "shutter" i.e. the
piece of tape covering the pinhole. This is when your exposure
starts.
- After the exposure time of your choice has passed, place the
piece of tape back on the pinhole to cover it.
- Attach a tag to the camera that has the following information:
your geocaching nickname (mandatory), the name of the photograph
(optional), coordinates to the location the photograph was taken at
(optional), date of the start and end of the exposure
(optional).
- Return the camera back to the cache or by mail if you can't
revisit the cache. You can get my postal address by contacting me
via my profile page.
- Leave a message to the cache log at geocaching.com, when you
have returned the camera, so I'll know when to pick one up from the
cache.
- I'll leave a note to the cache log everytime I scan new photos.
If you wish to be notified about new photos you can use the "watch
listing" option.
- UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES NEVER EVER OPEN THE CAMERA! YOUR
PHOTO WILL BE RUINED!
