Warning

Please note: To use the services of geocaching.com, you must agree to the terms and conditions in our disclaimer.

this is a virtual cache at the top of pen y fan
all you need to do is take 2 pictures - 1 of your gps and the view, and one of the view on its own. the weather is a little dodgey so be warned, it changes fast. If the view is zero a photo of the gps on the cairn will suffice. I have been up their in a BAD hail storm. It is not fun. play safe. get a map of the local area before you start. you may need to have several back up routes to get off. always be prepared for the worst.

dont forget to upload your pics to prove you have been there!

a good map site for close range walking (1:25000)can be found here
18/4/06 - Changed photo requirements to save a bit of space on the old servers. 2 photos now, not 3.

# 1000
this was our 1000th cache, it took us 1 year, 4 months, and three weeks to find thousand caches. This is special place for special occasion so we have have planned this for a while. Despite weather, we really enjoyed and although it was very windy and misty at Pen-y-fan, few metres down and suddenly, the clouds opened and we got some spectacular views. Thank you and we will be back sometimes in summer.

Found on a solo trip leaving the girls MA and KW behind
Well I got here over Corn Du first then as I went up to Pen y Fan the weather closed in. It was cold, wet and windy anyway, then as I got to the top the cloud and rain came down and I could hardly see anything. Took some photos mainly of the cloud going past.
Many Thanks for the Cache! I'd love to come back in better weather.

Nice'n'easy after the last few metres to Corn Du!

Sorry, but I had this cache's details on my PDA without the photo instructions, however I have attached a photo to BluNoze Boy (3) and Girl (8) at the summit.

Is the little man the youngest to climb this peak without a lift - what a guy - and fantastic views all round!

Glorious day so a proper walk with Mrs F climbing up from the Neuadd reservoir and around the ridge. Mrs F not too keen on seeking caches so sneaked in the obigatory photos for this one but missed out on opportunities for others. Big improvement on last year (not heard of GC then) when we were in a hailstorm.

Will have to upload my photo when my non caching friend provides them - he had a waterproof camera and I didnt. Absolutely shocking weather. The photo wont be up to much - just me and an equally wet mate in the cloud with next to no visibility! I would have done the earth cache from Cribyn but couldnt actually see anything to count! Photos to come, but just logging my cache finds. As well as the virtual, I had success with a couple of physical ones that I found up here. TFTC.

Yay 100th Cache Find
When I got here there was no one else about with light cloud around the summits of Corn Du and Pen y fan Fifteen minuets later it was totally clear.
Came up from the car-park before the story arms weather was sunny and warm for the most part until you get on the the peaks where it was quite windy.
First time I've been here and loved the whole thing. Every one should come here - returning from Crybin every body was!

I parked over in the forest at Neuadd, and walked up past the resevoir, as I climbed up over Cribyn the weather really started to deteriorate. In particular a ferocious wind started to blow that felt like it could lift you off your feet. The clouds moved in and visibility was very poor. I was grateful for the good quality path. There were plenty of soldiers on the Brecons today presumably the trainers like the adverse conditions. The weather made the going tougher than I was expecting, and I was grateful to reach the cairn. I was going to go back via Tommy Jones and Ice and Fire, but decided it was more than I fancied in the conditions and retraced my steps. Worth the terrain rating on a day like this. Oh yes, my 800th cache too.

This was one of the main goals of this holiday we've been spending in Wales. We had to wait a couple of days for the weather to improve, but today was the day. Been there, seen it. Regretfully I was stupid enough to not enter the coordinates for the cache near the summit in my GPS-device, so I (We) missed that one.
The first picture is me on the cairn with the GPS-device (don't mind the silly looking guy in the picture), the second picture is taken towards Bailea, where the car was parked. We (my wife, two daughters (10 and 12) and I had a perfect day. Thanks a lot.

I don't know either but Messie Nessie cooked it! We thoroughly enjoyed the walk up to this cache, especially Messie Nessie who was up the hill like a rat up a drainpipe. The only slightly annoying bit was that a couple of hundred yards from the top I fell over, grazed my knee and put a very impressive hole in a new pair of Berghaus trousers. Still, that's par for the course for me. Thanks for the cache. Photos on behalf of both of us to follow shortly.

What a wonderful day I had on the best day of a wet week. I started out from the parking area in the forest near talybont resevoir. I covered a total of 18 miles taking in 7 peaks including Cribben, PenY Fan, the diving board etc etc. It was an awesome walk, spoiled only by the fact the the tourist hordes had climbed Pen y fan.

I bagged 12 caches on the way.

Thank you all for the efforts in placing these caches in such wonderful areas.

I have not been strictly compliant with the instructions but i hope the picture of me with Geopooch, GPS & maps etc will suffice. this was taken by a very kind gent whilst I was trying to avoid the hordes.

I have been here many times in the past, in cloud, rain and snow. Today was the first time for Andrew, and the best ever weather for me - a gloriously sunny day, with barely a cloud in sight. We did a circuit of Cwm Sere - up via Allt Ddu and the northern ridge of Pan Y Fan, down towards Cribyn, then picked our way down the Cwm, and back along the valley.

Was up in the Brecons as part of a team taking part in the WAAT 4 challenge - a 40km circular hike starting and ending in Brecon, via the summit of Pen y Fan. All in aid of the Welsh Air Ambulance (that's why it was buzzing the kids in the log below).
Only took one picture of me at the summit cairn holding my GPS as the cloud had come down so nothing else could be seen. The photo is on a friend's camera so will convert this note to a found as soon as I've got the piccie to upload.
Been to this location many times, but only remembered to take the picture on this visit.

Piccie now received, so changed to a found log.

It was like Piccadilly Circus on top of Pen Y Fan today. The glorious Bank holiday weather had brought out the muggles in an M1 type congestion approaching and covering the summit. Muggles were wondering what I was doing, holding out a yellow "mobile" (GPS) and taking a photo...strange. haven't been up here for thirty years'. There were about six people at the top then. Enjoying a fantastic day out walking the peaks while attending the IV S. Wales Event at Talybont on Usk.

Parked up in one of the car parks at Taf Fechan Forest and started our walk up Tor Glas, then cut slightly cross country up to Fan y Big, then along to Cribyn, Pen y Fan, Corn Du then along Craig Fan Du before making a steep descent back to Neuadd Reservoir and along to the car.

The climb up here was a real lung buster and we needed a five minute sit down before even contemplating photos. When we were stood admiring the views it was worth all the panting, deep breathing and muscle agony. I wouldn't change a single step. Delighted to be able to claim Pen Y Fan !!!!

I'll be back for the nearby trad, which I forgot all about. It's great to have an excuse to come back though. What a place!

January 3, 2009 by Ample and Workshy (580 found)
Saturday 3 January 2009 was the first day in nearly a week that the sun actually came out so we decided to head off to the hills. We (that is Workshy, N and N's friend J) parked up in the car park on the A470 - this took us a while as the car park was nearly full, and set off towards Pen y Fan.

The weather was very cold and there was lots of ice on the path and frozen waterfalls on Blaen Taf Fawr. The path was very busy with walkers. Once at and beyond Bwlch Duwynt there was no shelter from the bitterly cold wind. However we pressed on to Pen y Fan.

At the cairn (which is much smaller since I was last here about 15 years ago) I took the required pictures and then admired the views. Unfortunately the picture of the GPS and the view was blurred (camera shake as it was so cold (had to take gloves off to use the camera) and windy) so I have substituted a picture of the GPS on the cairn and some views.

We had intended to try to visit other nearby caches but did not to as it was so busy we decided that we could not get away with finding them without being seen. So we will be back in this area one day.

Went back to the car park via Corn Du.

Thank you for the virtual cache.

We hadn't planned on including a climb of Pen-y-fan in our short tour of Wales, but the publican at the Dragon Inn Crickhowell convinced us that it was a must. At the summit a phone call home got us the co-ordinates. A clear day and a large number of fellow walkers out enjoying the view.

Arrived at virtual cache site at 3.15pm while on the West Brom Mountaineering Club record Xmas Meet (79 members to the hills in 2 coaches) during which most completed the traverse from Pencelli to Storey Arms on a lovely cold sunny day. We had superb views most of the day although cloud did cover the 2 big summits around noon and, Sod's Law, did so again when we were descending Cribyn. We didn't see as many other folk as in previous years so our Santas' sweet sacks remained heavier for longer and our walking gear was not admired as much as usual! TVM4tVC.

Stopped here to enjoy the views across the beacons and the black mountains, and to listen to a leacture on Weather conditions from what looked like the leader of an outdoor pursuits group, who had what looked like a portable Weather station with him.

He staed that the temperature was Minus 4 degree's and that with the wind Chill the Temp was dropping down to Minus 16.

I could tell from the looks on the Childrens faces that All they wanted to do wasto get moving off the hill as they were cold.

Posted a couple of nice pictures for those who were unable to get up on the hills yesterday.

The high point of a great 10.5 mile circular walk from the parking area below Craig Y Fan Ddu. Weather was superb, mostly sunny with the cloud base only dropping after I had got onto the ridge walk beyond Corn Du. This was the first time I have been here since a December visit while at university nearly 30 years ago when it was so windy that getting to the summit was difficult because of being blown backwards on the ice. Much easier today, though no less an adventure.

Thanks for drawing me back, the Beacons are a beautiful piece of countryside

Fifth cache of the day on an amazing 14 mile walk around the Brecon Beacons. SKid had to stop and wait for me a few times on the way up and at one point encouraged me to keep going as he could see the sign. As I reached him I realized it was just a sign and there was still more climbing to be done!!! Quite busy at the summit considering we had not encountered that many walkers along the route we had taken to get there.

17:32 This was supposed to be a walk up to Llyn Cwm Llwch with the kids, and no geoaching to be done. But when we reached the lake the two dads (servisal and HMV) got pretty keen to keep going up after we discovered that there was a way up from the valley. So the other half of servisal stayed with the youngest children at the lake to look at leeches and newts and so on, and we headed up with HMVs eldest. At 7yo he was very proud of himself for geting up the mountain (in wellies) and kept up a steady chatter all the way while the elderly ones just concentrated on putting one foot in front of the other.
We made it, and it was well worth while. Looking forward to taking the rest of the kids up when they are a bit older.

Sadly no GPS picture as my mum and dad had the GPS's and wouldn't let me take one with me(the don't trust me with something that expensive!)

Hi on looking on your profile I noticed that you have not logged into geocaching.com since 8-9-07. The guidelines wich can be seen at (visit link) state that as the owner of GC5250 which is a virtual cache you must log into the site once a month to show that you are active.

quote:

Virtual Cache, Webcam Cache, and Locationless Cache Maintenance Guidelines

The cache owner will assume all responsibility for their cache listings.

Although the cache is not something you physically maintain, you must maintain your cache's web page and respond to inquiries. In the case of Virtual Caches and Webcam Caches you must periodically check the physical location. You may temporarily disable your cache to let others know not to hunt for it until you have a chance to fix the problem. This feature is to allow you a reasonable time – normally a few weeks – in which to arrange a visit to your cache.

You should also return to the Geocaching.com web site at least once a month to show you are still active. Caches posted and "abandoned" may be archived by the site.

The poster will assume the responsibility of quality control of logged “finds” for the cache, and will agree to delete any “find” logs that appear to be bogus, counterfeit, off topic, or not within the stated requirements.

In the event that a cache is not being properly maintained, or has been temporarily disabled for an extended period of time, we may archive the listing. Grandfathered caches may not be unarchived.

If you have not logged into Geocaching.com within the next 28 days, I will presume that you have abandoned GC5250 and Archive it on the grounds of Non maintenance.

I would love to say that it’s a great view from up on the top of Pen Y Fan but I can’t , visibility was down to about 10 feet and it was very cold. Likely I had lots of nice warm cloths on . Can’t say the same for my camera, for some reason it had decided not function at all , which meant I could not get a photo even if there was not a lot to see! But after an email to Bloke1987 with a little proof I’m glad to say that I’m allowed to claim it as a find , thanks Joe.
Even if the visibility was bad it was still a great walk and a great place for a cache.

circular walk from Lower Neuadd Reservoir taking in Corn Du, PenyFan, Cribyn and FanyBig. Atrocious weather - Cloudy and and blowing a gale on the top of each col - ive never seen waterfalls going upwards, but they were today. Taking photos at the top of Penyfan was the last thing on my mind, as staying upright was rather more important - so took this pic a bit further down the slope towards Cribyn. Am also attaching pic of the route as uploaded from GPS into Memory Map. Hope that suffices.

UZE. Pen y fantastic.

We found it on a typical Beacons day, at the bottom the sun was out in all it's glory but up top we were in the clouds with limited views, most of the time we saw nothing, but then now and again the clouds would clear, and we would be rewarded with glorious views.

Did the Hearts first walk in the Brecons, 20km across Pen Y Fan and Corn Du witha team from work (Eli Lilly) as the Lilly Limpers.

Sadly Lilly closed up shop in Sept last year and I am now working somewhere closer to home.

Am doing it again this year so hopefully will be able to find a few caches on the way round!

We had already planned to climb the Brecon hills today but the hot sunny weather was a bonus. Although the route and peaks were busy we were surprised there were not more people around. Great views all around; lots of flying ants too Took the required pictures and C did some transmitting on her amateur radio before we headed back down. TFTC,

First of two today. I shared the view with a group of Royal Marines on exercise. A few came across to see what I was up to and compare GPS units. There were very few people about at 9.30, once the Marines moved off so I took the required pictures. There was quite good visibility today. I then had breakfast and made my way to Tommy Jones cache on Corn Du. TFTC Steve

3 of 5 today. I walked up from the Storey Arms Centre, taking the gentler but far longer path to visit Tommy Jones’s obelisk before the steep climb up to Corn Du and the easier saddle to Pen y Fan summit. The walk up was in glorious sunshine with a good stiff breeze to take the edge off the heat and far-reaching views, but at the top the haze was obscuring the best. Hope the photos show enough detail. Thanks

Have been contemplating logging this for a long time, as I don't technically meet the requirements - but I'm hoping you'll let me off considering I did climb to the top!

I have a picture from the top, but I don't have a picture of my green machine (GPS), because we weren't allowed one! I was doing my Gold Duke of Edinburgh expedition. I do however have the map we used on view in the picture!

I hope you don't mind me claiming this one, as I did get to the top of Pen Y Fan (and Corn Du for that matter!)

Decided the day before we would go to South Wales walking only to find it had snowed about an inch over night. The drive there wasn't too bad and as we arrived the sun came out. What a fantastic day with amazing weather. We walked up along the Craig Cwm Llwch ridge to the top of Pen y Fan and then carried on to Cribyn. The plan was to go onto Fan y Big but as there were more snow clouds on the horizon it was time to head home. A long days walk but one of the most enjoyable so far.

We checked the mountain weather forecast beforw we set off this morning and was told that the cloud base would be at 300 meters but the tips of the mountains would be above the cloud tops at around 700 to 800 meters. How wrong they were, with Pen-y-fan at 886 meters and still in thick cloud.
Parked up to the North in the Cwm Llwych parking area as this is our favourite walk up to the top and not as busy as the Story Arms car park. At the top it was much busier than we expected for a Christmas morning, we were hoping to have the mountain to ourselves. Everyone seemed to wearing silly Christmas hats this morning. us included.

Sorry to disappoint Satellite boy - but we did not get up at the crack of dawn or walk 200 miles before getting here - it was 4pm, 70+ degrees, bright sunshine and nobody around apart from the swallows diving to catch insects - Pen-y-fantastic !!!

Haven't walked up to Pen Y Fan for over 2 years. Came up from the North side which is something we haven't tried before. A great walk up, nice to relax in the bath when we got back. Muscles really aching!

A perfect day and hence very busy on the summit (see the pics!)
I can recommend the ascent from cwm-llwch farm via the memorial and corn du rather than the "motorway" from the storey arms for a more enjoyable walk.

We rented a barn conversion that looked straight out to Pen y Fan. How could we resist? Even the mini Cloggers managed it. Lovely weather and, surprisingly, not too crowded.

On the way down we stopped at Llyn Cwm Llwch (which I would call a tarn). The frogspawn had to be seen to be believed. The piccie doesn't do it justice.

The view to the top did not seem too steep so of we trotted but after only a few minutes mum kazclan and junior kazclan soon started to slow down, after several stops :-) we finally made it too the top, and was rewarded with fantastic views. the weather was bright and very sunny although the breeze was very welcome.

Ah lovely visit on a beatiful clear day. But boy is that wind cold!

Had a little trouble getting a good photo of my GPS, I use a PDA to go Geocaching with and the screen isn't so photogenic!

Well here they are anyway.

Well it looks like I'm the first to complete this one in 2006. This was the first of two caches for today. I used to come to the mountains all the time for recreational purposes but in the last 3 years other things have gotten in the way so climbing & hillwalking took a backseat. It was great to be back. The weather was a bit hit and miss as you can see from the summit images. The day was somewhat overcast with patches of sun so I was feeling hopeful for a great summit view and as I approached the summit it certainly looked good for it. But alas the unpredicatbility of the Welsh weather decided views would be a temporary bonus and the cloudbase lowered to about 700m completely encompassing the summit plateau. So I'm afraid my pictures of the wonderful view are nothing but the welsh clouds. To rub salt in the wound as I summited nearby Cribyn before returning to the car at the reservoir to the south, the cloud lifted completely and there was even patches of sunshine. Bugger!!!

Had a walk up from Storey Arms. By the time we got to the Cairn it was dark and the cloud was down - had fun getting back to the car - but we are here to tell the story!

Finally made it to the top after a long and very wet walk.

Weather was very poor. Cloud started at only a few hundred meters and could see nothing at all once at the top (See pics). Rain was horizontal at times, very challenging and my first find is complete.

Only disappointed we could not see the view.

What a super walk to the top but was it busy? Lots of people there and it was cold and very windy! Hope you like the pictures.

On the way down it poured with rain and we both got soaked. Good job we were on the way home and had dry clothes to change into.

Thanks for ‘making’ us go to the top, such stunning views.

Found it? Well couldnt really miss it I suppose >:*)

Altho I approached from the Corn Du side and nobody told there was ANOTHER mountain behind it that the cache was based on!

Really enjoyable day out tho, lots of geomuggles but only the lone sheep seemed to be checking me out photographing my GPS on the cairn!
Can you have geomuggle sheeps???

Wonderful views and lots of strange sounds too - lots of bangs rumbling in from an (assumed) military training camp in the distance.

Thanks for this wonderful, if very tiring, cache >:*)
Took deep breaths! >:*(
Left the sheep poo!

Im off for a rest,
Regards,

A joint expedition with Jon (The Dewdrops).
The approach from the north along Cefn Cwn LLwch, especially the final climb, was tough, taking over 2 hours, but well worth it for the spectacular views. It was a hot day, and we questioned our sanity a number of times on the way! Quite surprised by the number of people at the top, although most appeared to have taken the "easy" route. We ate lunch, while admiring the views, before continuing towards Corn Du.
Definitely a fantastic location .

I chose this cache as my 600th!
MarcoXono agreed to accompany me on the expedition to do this and the Tommy Jones cache nearby.
We studied the logs beforehand, and finally decided to do the same route as Pharisee, approaching from the less popular northern route. However we did it in reverse, leaving the easier road walk to last.
We arrived at the Plas-y-gaer car park at 1000 hrs, and took the Allt Ddu/Cefn Cwm Llwch route to Pen y Fan.
We spotted what looked like a crashed glider on the NE face of Cribyn!
We wondered about the feasibility of it's recovery?
The final 1/4 mile to the summit was tough... being very steep with loose slate, which made it slow going!
The cache took longer than we anticipated, as the heat really was hard to contend with, 28-30 degrees with little wind. (We got through all our water by the end of our trek).
We arrived at the summit around 1220 hrs, had a 30 minute break and headed off to Corn Du, where we completed the Tommy Jones cache and took the return route via the Obelisk, Cwm-llwch and Llwynbedw, taking the road back to the car.
All in all, the toughest 7.5 miles I have walked for a long, long time!
We arrived back at the car around 1515 hrs and headed off to the nearest pub at Tai'r Bull.
TFTC bloke1987 - made it a really enjoyable day and one well worthy of a landmark cache!
