Geocache Description:

Located in a small park, there is nearby a magnificent view of West Point and an interesting historic site.

Okay, Putnam already has a fort across the river, the real name of this spot is The South Redoubt. Due to the sensitive archeological nature of this site, the actual cache is a short distance away in the woods, but be sure and visit the remains of the fort, read the historical sign and imagine this hill bristling with cannons as it defended the eastern approaches to West Point from British attack during the Revolutionary War. The park is known as the School Forest and belongs to the Garrison Union Free School District. There is a red blazed trail that connects to the North Redoubt.

Finding the trailhead for this park might be harder than finding the cache. Turn off at a drive way at 322 Cat Rocks Road (Route 403), through gates on stone pillars with a sign reading "Garrison School Forest". Then drive up to a small parking lot at the top of the driveway (N 41 22.355' W 73 55.820'). This is just across the road from Forest Farm Road, one driveway up the road. Follow the old wood road up the hill.

Take the white trail to the red trail to the cache.

The cache is currently a small decon container. We hope to replace it with the original 30 cal ammo can. I found an area with good overhead clearance, so GPS reception should be okay.
