Geocache Description:

In general, ongseong refers to defensive wall constructed outside main gates to protect them.
To enter main gates, one must pass ongseong. However, in Namhan Castle that has five ongseongs,
they were designed more on offensive purpose rather than on gate defending purpose, because they were
rather close to projected bastions from which defenders could attack the opponents accessing the wall.
Three ongseongs are in the south wall and one is in the north and east wall, respectively.
The reason that ongseong was mostly built in the south wall was because this side of wall was on
the least steep slope and so not only was difficult to defend opponents but also was the weakest point,
if the opponents occupied Beolbong Mountain (534.7 meters in height) near the wall or fired guns from the valley.
Ongseongs were mainly constructed at weak points of the fortress, and were connected through ammuns.
Also, at the edge of each ongseong was firearm bastion. Except Yeonjubong ongsong,
they were constructed after the Byeongja Horan, Ching's invasion in the year of Byeongja,
to effectively react to opponents' firearm attacks.
