Geocache Description:

You can get to this cache by taking Hwy 17 to Summit road. Summit Rd. south to Morrill Rd. Morrill Rd down to Wrights Station Road and down Wrights Station road for about a mile and a half.

We just finished the "Mountain History" cache by Kealia and it was a learning experience and a lot of fun. We had been to the final cache location earlier this summer with a bunch of train enthusiasts and local historians. We actually went to all of the abandoned train tunnels in the Santa Cruz mountains. So we knew where the "Other End" of the Mountain History cache tunnel came out at and we thought people would like to check it out.
Wrights was named after Reverend James Richard Wright. He settled here in 1869 on 48 acres of land he was given as a repayment of a debt. The Railroad came through in 1879 and by 1882 Wrights became a major shipping center. Local farmers would bring their fruits in to be shipped back east and parts in between. Soon a railroad maintenance station, a school a fruit packing plant and a hotel were located here.
In 1936 the San Jose Water works bought the land as part of their watershed. The town was abandoned in 1940. The train tunnel was dynamited at the beginning of W.W.II. Some say it was so that if the Japanese ever invaded California they would not be able to use the tunnels.
If you walk 50 ft west of the group of mailboxes and look back in past the fence you'll see the old abandoned tunnel. Also walk back over to the old bridge that has been here since the turn of the century. The large empty gravel area where you can park was the location of the Wrights Station Hotel.
The cache is an "Altoids" can. We started it out with a "Team Dakiba" bookmark and A "Geocaching coin" we picked up in the
Tahoe foothills.
We hope you enjoy your time here in Wrights and we hope you get to visit the other tunnels and towns and caches up here in the Santa Cruz Mountains.
