Geocache Description:

Middlesex County Greenway Overpass

Container is a micro sized container - log only - bring your own pen.

In Summer 2009, a new pedestrian overpass crossing Route One in Edison became available to the general public. Several days later, a new cache is born.

The Middlesex Greenway Trail connects Metuchen (Middlesex Ave) to Woodbridge (Crows Mill Rd). Current plans are to develop and maintain the Greenway as a public park for biking, jogging, hiking and nature study. Major extensions of the trail into Perth Amboy and South Plainfield are being considered.

In December 2002, the County acquired 3.5 miles of the old Lehigh Valley Railroad freight line, which was abandoned in 1996. Consolidated Rail Corporation donated the property to the County for $1.00 with the condition that the County would pay $50,000 to Conrail for their administration costs. The Middlesex Greenway became the 12,000th Mile of Rail-Trail in the United States.

The trail may someday be a link in the East Coast Greenway, which will run from Calais, Maine at the Canadian border all the way south to Key West, Florida. Started in 1991, it is planned as a 3,000 mile lowland trail that will run through almost every major city on the east coast on public-right-of-way by linking together locally managed trails into a continuous route.
