Ironed Out Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

matengyun: I tried replacing it, waiting, and revisiting, but it disappeared again. Too many sly red foxes or hooligans around. I will go ahead and archive it if someone else wants to give it a try. Maybe over at the other entrance where there is a playground and some historical foundations would be a better place.

Geocache Description:

Mine some rock at this old iron mine. The cache is a plastic container loaded up with small rock samples. It is a short walk on a trail that has a little uneven terrain and there’s a short uphill scramble to the cache about 30 feet from the flatland. Only accessible in daytime.

This little 8.6-acre park is heavily wooded so you will not get a signal in most of the area when the leaf is on. A good patch of open sky at the cache gets you some satellites. When the leaf is on, you’ll need to figure out the general direction to go when you head into the mine. (The difficulty rating is closer to 2 in winter.) The entrance is at the KIOSK waypoint W 75.7702, N 39.65383.

This is the Chestnut Hill Mine Preserve of the Delaware Academy of Science who runs the Iron Hill Museum (visit link) Mining occurred on Chestnut Hill from 1875-1910 and some ruins of the ore-processing facility are still intact. A short historical note can be found here. (visit link)
