Geocache Description:

Built in 1832, the Duntroon Dairy is the oldest building in Canberra. Soon after Robert Campbell settled Duntroon, a stone dairy was built here above the fertile pastures of the Molonglo floodplain.

In 1865 Ambrose Austen became dairyman. His bricklaying skills have left us today’s building of stone and brick. He built a family cottage beside the dairy, and his married daughters, Alice Warwick and Elizabeth Mayo, lived and worked here.

After Duntroon was resumed for the Federal Capital in 1911, Elizabeth’s daughter Jennet and son-in-law Charles Edlington leased back the family cottage and surrounding land. The Edlington family continued dairying into the 1960s, building new cottages, stables and dairy sheds. But, the old dairy fell into disuse. By 1972 its roof had collapsed. With the Edlingtons long gone, the other buildings - declared unsafe - were demolished. Fortunately, the dairy’s heritage significance is now recognised. Beautifully restored, it stands witness to the lives and times of early Canberra. It is one of the few remaining buildings in Canberra with a shingled roof!
