Geocache Description:

A "John Masser Memorial" Geocache . . . Spectacularly positioned Point Pilcher is well worth a visit. The late Banksia777 established this 'drive-by' geocache to entice visitors to a lovely spot that's not often frequented. The lookout is well fenced.

If you want to escape the tourism of Katoomba and you don't have time for the long drive to the famous Kanangra Walls, then turn right at the traffic lights after the Hydro Majestic, in Medlow Bath, drive east beside the railway line for a while and head out to Point Pilcher on Rutland Road and Grand Canyon Road. The original track to Point Pilcher was built by Mark Foy's gardener way back in 1905. There are 5.2 kilometres of dirt road which can easily be traversed by conventional 2WD cars if you drive slowly. When you see the little-known Katoomba Air Field off to the right, then you'll know you're getting close to your goal. The reward for your trip will be a superb view down to Govetts Creek and across the dense bushland known as the Grose Wilderness, which has fortunately remained totally untouched by the civilisation. You'll be viewing one of the most isolated areas in the Blue Mountains. Banksia777 writes: "Make sure you bring your camera to take a few pics. There’s a covered picnic shelter and toilets available within metres of the car park and GZ. Stealth is required to retrieve the cache if there are muggles about." The container is a rather large micro with a magnetic ring, hidden quite close to the car park area. No walking is required. Bring your own pen or pencil, just in case. Don't even think of going over or around the safety fence. There's no need. Watch your geo-kids and keep them in sight, because there are dangerous drop-offs in the general area (though well away from GZ). Thanks to our departed friend Banksia777 for placing this cache.
