A note that this cache was not
affected by the 2004 wildfires in the Santa Clarita area. The
area around the trail up to the cache was not burned either.
It is still a nice, scenic hike!
The Antonovich Open Space
Preserve was dedicated in August 2002. This new addition to the
Santa Clarita Woodlands Park adds 507 acres of open space to the
park. This new southeastern parkland is uncrowded and quiet (once
you get above I-5).
The trailhead is located
at N34 20.457, W118 31.557. Thomas Guide map page 4641, grid A6.
The terrain rating for this cache is for a short, sort-of steep
climb up to a T in the road. After this, the terrain rating is a 2
or 2.5 with some nice flat stretches.
This is an off-set
multi-cache. The coordinates posted will not take you to the
location of the cache container, but to a rest area in the
Antonovich Open Space Preserve where you need to pick-up a clue to
get the final coordinates.
Once you reach the posted coordinates, you’ll see a covered rest
area with a bench. Your GPS should point to a green steel pole
right next to the rest area. Look for a small LA County Flood
Control District marker on the pole near the top. Use the last line
of this marker to fill in the X’s below:
3 X X TO X X
X
Then, use the following key to translate the letters into the last
five digits of the latitude, using this key:
A=4, C=5, F=2, G=0, H=7,
I=3, J=3, M=2, N=2, O=0, R=7, S=1, T=0, V=5, X=2
For example, if the line
on the marker reads 3 MI TO GAS, this would give you
latitude reading of:
N34 23.041.
Once you have the latitude, use the following longitude
reading for the actual cache:
W118
32.022
The cache is a standard camo ammo box hidden about 30 feet off the
fire road. No real bushwacking to reach, just a little light
vegetation. Please replace the ammo box exactly as you found
it.
And..... Clenchy
McClenchenheimer Travel Bug starts his journey in this
cache.
Have fun and good luck!
