Heracleum sosnowskyi or Sosnowsky's Hogweed, is a flowering plant in the family Apiaceae, originally native to Caucasus. Now it is a common weed in the Baltic States, Belarus, Russia, Ukraine.
All parts of Heracleum sosnowskyi contain the intense toxic allergen furanocoumarin. It is dangerous for humans because even small drops of plant's juice cause photosensitivity and burns. When one comes into contact with the juice the most important thing to do is to cover the flesh from sun - the juice reacts with UV rays to create the nasty burns.
Sosnovska latvānis ievests Latvijā 1950.-1960.gados no Kaukāza reģiona. Astoņdesmito gadu beigās un deviņdesmito gadu sākumā tā izplatība Latvijā kļuva nekontrolējama.
Atšķirībā no arī Latvijā sastopamā Sibīrijas latvāņa, kas cilvēkam nav kaitīgs, Sosnovska latvāņa sula, nonākot uz cilvēka ādas izraisa smagus apdegumus. Kad sula nonāk uz ādas, galvenais ir skarto vietu aizsegt no saules, jo sulā esošie furokumarīni reaģē ar ultravioleto starojumu, izraisot apdegumus.
