Hornet's Hide 23 - Sam's Squirrel Quest (Herts) Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Graculus: This cache has been disabled for some time and as the owner has not repaired/replaced I am archiving it.

Guidelines: "As the cache owner, you are also responsible for physically checking your cache periodically, and especially when someone reports a problem with the cache (missing, damaged, wet, etc.). You may temporarily disable your cache to let others know not to hunt for it until you have a chance to fix the problem. This feature is to allow you a reasonable time - normally a few weeks - in which to arrange a visit to your cache. In the event that a cache is not being properly maintained, or has been temporarily disabled for an extended period of time, we may archive the listing."

If you wish to email me please send your email via my profile (click on my name) and quote the cache name and number.

Geocache Description:

Why the name? Well this is on one of Sam's favourite walks and where he continues his futile attempt to wipe out the grey squirrel population!

It's set in Dell Wood close to the much larger Whippendell Woods near Watford. The closest parking is in Rousebarn Lane which although accessible for cars, has a barrier in the middle so you can't drive its full length. Two car parks are located at 51°40.061'N, 0°27.020'W (if approach from the North West) and 51°39.954'N, 0°26.893'W (from the South East). Although parking is generally trouble free, especially during the day, there are occasional break-ins so if you are nervous you could always park in The Clarendon Arms at 51°40.396'N, 0°27.647'W. If you do this you might feel obliged to buy a pint (or more)

Although the OS map doesn't show any public footpaths going through the wood, there are plenty of permissive paths and walkers are welcome. The area is popular with ramblers and dog walkers but hopefully I've found a quiet hiding spot a short distance off the path.

The cache is a small lock'n'lock type box so small swaps and TB's are welcome.

Hornet's Hides 2 & 11 are within easy walking distance so the three of them could be combined into a pleasant 1hr stroll.
