Geocache Description:

This cache is located atop Huerfano Butte, a prominent and isolated crag located on the Santa Rita Experimental Range near the old mininig town of Helvetia.

Huerfano Butte is located about 25 miles SE of Tucson and 9 miles East of Sahuarita. Approach via Santa Rita Road which starts in Sahuarita. It is the 3rd road past the train tracks heading East on Sahuarita Rd.

This small butte is a great desert summit. It is not difficult, but it is a steep 300 ft climb. The cache is on the summit, which is 4002 ft. in elevation. You can park within 0.1 miles of the base, and be back at your car within 1 to 2 hrs, depending on how fast you are and how long you enjoy the summit views.

The North ridge provides exceptional class 3 climbing on solid rock, whereas the West face is a short and steep hike. The cache is a PVC pipe container, with a log, a pencil, and some treasure. Enjoy this one, it is short and sweet.

Note: This cache is on State Trust Land and you must have a State Trust Land recreation permit to legally be in this place. These permits are easily obtained by phoning (602) 364-ASLD. This is a recording in which people can request a permit application. The permits are relatively inexpensive - $15 for an Individual Permit, and $20 for a Family Permit. The permits are good for one year from the date of issue, and allow legal access to any State Trust Land in Arizona. More information may be found at the following link: (visit link)
