Geocache Description:

Web-ling cache #119
My first Ohio "O-Cache" (orienteering cache)!

This cache can be solved in two different ways. The first way is using an aerial photo and compass. The second way is as a multicache using a GPS. I would encourage you to try the first way.

Method 1: The O-Cache

First, download and print the marked aerial photo.

Follow the marked route and decode the clues to derive a bearing and distance needed to locate the cache.

To decode letters, use A=1, B=2, C=3,...Y=25, Z=26.

STAGE 1
Next to the "liberty bell" is a bench. Under the bench is a plaque dedicated to Bettie N _ _ _.
a = the value of the first letter
b = the value of the second letter
c = the value of the third letter

STAGE 2
Directly in front of the Peace Statue is the grave of Nicholas (1931-2004). What is his last name?
e = the value of the first letter
f = the value of the second letter
g = the value of the third letter

Stage 3
What year was the flagpole dedicated?
h = the last two digits of the year, divided by 10

Stage 4
i = the number of bolts that hold the cross to the concrete.

FINAL STAGE
From stage 4:
Take a compass bearing of (i x h) degrees.
Follow the heading for ((a x c x f x g) + e + b) feet.

It's a log-only micro.

Method 2: The Multi-cache

According to the cache placement guidelines, "GPS usage is an essential element of geocaching. Therefore, although it is possible to find a cache without a GPS, the option of using accurate GPS coordinates as an integral part of the cache hunt must be demonstrated for all physical cache submissions."

Since all caches must be findable using GPS coordinates, Method 2 is a 3-stage multicache.

To decode letters, use A=1, B=2, C=3,...Y=25, Z=26.

Stage 1 At the posted coordinates, next to the "liberty bell" is a bench. Under the bench is a plaque dedicated to Bettie N _ _ _.
a = the value of the first letter
b = the value of the second letter
c = the value of the third letter

The latitude for stage 2 is (a x b x 1.084846)
The longitude for stage 2 is (b x c x 1.006081)
Both latitude and longitude are in DD.DDDDD format.

Stage 2
What is Madeleine's last name?
d = the value of the first letter
e = the value of the second letter
f = the value of the third letter
g = the value of the fourth letter
h = the value of the fifth letter
i = the value of the sixth letter

Stage 3
y = (d + e + f) x (h + 3.71)
z = (g + h + i) x (e + 4.429)
The cache is at N39 17.y, W084 34.z

It's a log-only micro.
