Roughlock Falls Cache II Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

Rana Pirica: Greetings from Geocaching.com

It looks like your cache has been under the weather for some time. While we feel that Geocaching.com should hold the location for you and block other cachers from hiding new geocaches around this cache for a reasonable amount of time, we can't do so forever. Therefore we are archiving this cache so that someone else can place a cache in the area and geocachers can once again enjoy visiting this location. If you haven't done so already, please pick up any remaining cache pieces as soon as possible.

If you are in the process of replacing or repairing your cache please e-mail me in response to this archival, and I will assist you in getting your cache re-listed if possible.

I want to thank you for the time that you have taken to contribute to geocaching in the past and look forward to seeing your caches up and running in the future.

Geocache Description:

This is Team Family Affair’s 7th cache and our fist in our Mountain Goat series of caches- (It's a bit of a climb).

The cache location is up on the hillside 200 feet downstream from the falls, with a great view of the canyon and trail walkway below. Roughlock falls is a twin waterfall (the only one we know of in the Black Hills). The name Roughlock comes from the history of the area as back in the late 1800s (gold rush days) when the drivers of the wagons would often have to "Roughlock" their wagon wheels with chains or logs in order to slowly slide them down the steep slopes of the canyon to get to the bottom. Once at the bottom they would rehitch the horses and continue on the trail. The canyon is made up of mostly limestone except at the falls. The falls were created as the water eroded the soft limestone and exposed a much harder section of igneous rock (created when there was underground volcanic activity eons ago).

There are lots of great hiking trails in the area as well as many scenic photo opportunities. In the winter this area is a tourist Mecca for snowmobilers and when the water falls ice over, it adds a whole new dimension to the scenery.

Here are your clues

  • For all of you who have been here before, the area has been reconstructed (May 2003) and some of the the old trails has been removed.
  • To find this cache - leave the new walking path after you cross the bridge below the falls, and begin your uphill trek to find the treasure you seek!
  • The cache is well camoflaged, and is right in the open with a rock on top of it.
  • The cache was an ammo can but someone took the can and replaced it with a rubbermaid container.
  • Please don't forget to sign in and register your thoughts about our cache while you enjoy great view of the limestone cliffs and the canyon below.
We hope you have as much fun finding this cache as we did placing it! Happy Geocaching

- Team Family Affair (Scott, Mary & Matt)
