The historic, man-made Black Eagle Memorial Island located downstream from the Black Eagle Dam, opened to the public for the first time in the summer of 2005. The island features exceptional stone walls, a restored truss bridge and an interpretive viewing plaza below the falls. A 1,500-foot path links to a viewing area at the tip of the island. Recreational opportunities include hiking, biking, kayaking, canoeing, fishing and picnicking. The island also offers outstanding views of the falls and the remains of Paris Gibson’s first hydropower plant, and of the river canyon, birds and wildlife.
Black Eagle Dam is 753 feet long and 13 feet high. Its reservoir has a storage capacity of 1,710 acre-feet. The original powerhouse went into operation in 1891; it was replaced in 1926. Ryan Dam is part of the Great Falls Portage National Historic Landmark. This was designated by the federal government in 1966 to commemorate Lewis and Clark’s travel around the five falls of the Missouri River in the summer of 1805.
PPL Montana owns and operates 11 dams in Montana. In addition to producing power, these dams provide flood control, irrigation and public recreation, and help protect and enhance fisheries, wildlife, wetlands habitat and water quality.
