This cache has been archived.

Packanack: 11/2/2008--Word got back to me that this burial ground will be cleaned up shortly. A local Eagle Scout Project will take place here in the not to distant future. I am especially happy to hear that this cache served as an impetus for this project and being that the container would probably get exposed the cache has been archived. Container was picked up.

Geocache Description:

This is probably the most important place in American History.

I kid you not. Everyone knows the Declaration of Independence was signed in 1776, but what they don't know is that the British Army knocked around the American Army , pretty much at will over the course of several years. In 1780, in this vicinity, Washington convened a meeting with all of the important military leaders, and he brought their armies together along this valley. It was known as the Preakness Encampment. It streched for several miles up and down the line. Lafayette lived in a house a couple of blocks away, the house remains as a private dwelling. The Preakness Encampment was the place where the strategy of the American Revolution was changed and the victory designed by the collective military genius of the era. A grand cooperative effort was born in this area.

But this cache location is the real important spot. It is a graveyard, or burial ground and reportedly some soldiers who died during encampment (disease was a big cause of death in those days) were buried here. They gave up their lives in pursuit of freedom. I stopped by here the other day, approaching from another side and I was amazed at the condition of the place. I hope to get someone to allow for a clean up and spruce up, which was last performed 15 years ago.
