JEFFERSON MEMORIAL FOREST

Saturday, April 17, 2004 at 9 am
This is a coordinated effort with the
Administrator of Jefferson Memorial Forest
Please be prompt to receive your trash pick-up assignment

FINAL UPDATE: Everyone will need to sign a release form for the city government to participate in the CITO event. Long pants, sturdy boots, and gloves are required. If you plan to hike the Siltstone Trail with us, bring extra water and trail snacks. You may want to consider shorts and bug repellant also. When you arrive, please see JEEPSTAFF or Eagles61 to register, get a nametag, sign-up for the hike, and arrange return transportation from the end of the Siltstone Trail.

GOALS:
Perform our community service as responsible users of all parks
Expose you to Jefferson Memorial Forest
Expose you to the Siltstone Trail today to encourage return visits for hiking and to do the Siltstone Series of caches on those return visits

TRASH:
Gather at the Tom Wallace Welcome Center on Mitchell Hill Road
Trash pick-up 9-11:30 am
Bags and bag collection provided by the forest service
PLEASE BRING YOUR OWN GLOVES
PLEASE WEAR LONG PANTS

LUNCH:
Lunch 11:30-noon. Please bring your own food.
We will provide cold drinks for lunch and water for hiking.

HIKE:
An organized hike of the full 6.5 miles (rated strenuous and 3 hours) along the complete Siltstone Trail (Tom Wallace Welcome Center to Scotts Gap Road) is planned after the CITO. Return transportation from the end of the trail will be provided. Lumberjack Tom has hiked the entire trail and will be glad to advise you in any way.

CACHING:
Ten temporary event caches will be stashed very near the trail.
Coordinates will be distributed after lunch to all who participated in trash pick-up.
(All actual Siltstone Series caches will be CLOSED for that day only).
Sorry, you cannot log the temporary event caches without picking up trash and logging the CITO Event.
We want to keep the group together, or at least in as few smaller groups as possible (allowing for different hiking paces). Please understand that it would be time-consuming and disruptive if individuals left their hiking groups to search for the 'real' Siltstone Series caches.
There are several other caches in the vicinity that are not part of the actual Siltstone Series that will be open as usual for those who cannot participate in the afternoon hike but still want to do some area caching.
Whether you participate in the Siltstone Hike or not, there is plenty of caching available in the immediate area.

REMEMBER:
Bring gloves, lunch, GPSr, and a friendly attitude. This is an important event and a chance to act out the “Cache In-Trash Out” mantra of our group. We have an excellent reputation with the local parks people, and we would like to continue and advance that image.

TRUTH IN ADVERTISING:
In scheduling, please be aware that this is also the date for Thunder Over Louisville. You should be able to pick up trash, hike and cache, and rest plenty before the fireworks. If you have to choose, just remember that you are ADDICTED to geocaching and service projects and have no real choice in the matter. Get your priorities straight!
