I have derived much pleasure and great exercise from hiking through the hills in the El Modena Open Space over the years. Mostly I have limited myself to the ridge trail, but recently, I discovered a serpentine trail that snakes its way up the west side of the hills. And, like all good trails, this one was definitely in need of a geocache. There is nothing terribly unique about this one. The cache is a camouflaged prescription container lurking along the rocky path. It has some room for small trade items. I placed it to bring attention to the trail and the view. On a clear day, Catalina and San Clemente Islands are visible, along with the skyscrapers in downtown Los Angeles. More careful observers will catch sight of the occasional roadrunner, quail, hummingbird, and even rattlesnakes and coyotes that live in the hills. There's plenty of evidence of ancient volcanic activity, too.
Parking is easily found on E. Stillwater Ave. at Cannon Street. There's an unmarked trailhead across Cannon from E. Stillwater. Follow the trail around to the west side of the hill, and then bear left when the trail splits into three paths.
