How Geocaching Works
All stages of the cache are either assessible by car or on walking paths in the park.

You are now at the entrance to Portage la Prairie’s Gem!, the amazing “Island in the City”. Created by an oxbow of the Assiniboine River, the horseshoe-shaped setting is home to several playground areas, picnic sites, and recreational facilities. While on the Island you can observe the deer, take a walk along the scenic limestone trails,enjoy the beautiful display of birds at the bird pen and the abundance of Canada Geese that call Crescent Lake home. The park is a fantastic site for walking, jogging, cycling, and rollerblading.
Cross the bridge and proceed to

As you reach your destination you will see Portage’s Exhibition grounds. Until recently a grandstand and ball diamond surrounded by a harness racing track attracted people of all ages. Now a brand new recreation facility has been built. Located nearby the livestock barns you will find the campground with new washroom and shower facilities. At this stage find the most obvious 7 digit number and assign the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 6th digits to the constants A,B,C & D

At this location you will see the beautiful 18 hole golf course which features all the hallmarks of Manitoba golf. Observe the signs and using the year of establishment assign
the 1st digit to the constant H
J will equal the 2nd digit minus the 3rd digit minus the 4th digit
Proceed to the 4th Stage which is located at N49 57.KCF

The Arboretum is an educational collection of prairie hardy trees, shrubs and vines. A wheel chair access pathway joins a series of stations giving information on plants, horticulture, forestry and wildlife. The Arboretum is free to the public and is an ideal outdoor classroom to learn about plants and their importance to the environment. The Arboretum covers 4 acres and has over 300 different types of plants. With each visit you will have a new impression of the plants that contribute to the prairie landscape.
Follow the trail and read the signs along the way. You will come across an information sign on plant hardiness zones. Determine the coordinates of the 5th stage using

Where M= the 1st digit of the uppermost hardiness zone.
N= the 1st digit of the hardiness zone 5th from the top
P= the sum of the 1st digits of the hardiness zones 4th from the top and the 8th from the top.
Don’t forget to try a game of tennis on one of the 4 newly resurfaced courts!
Winter creates a wonderland in the park as the duck pond is turned ice rink, a toboggan slide is created and cross-country ski trails are groomed. There are 2 washroom facilities, 3 picnic facilities and a performing stage with power outlets and a wheelchair accessible pathway.
When you arrive here, have a seat, rest and enjoy the view. When ready proceed to the FINAL destination using the co-ordinates N49 57.GQA W098 17.HRE
Where Q = the number of benches around the feature you are sitting at +B-A.
R= the number of benches plus the number of culverts you can see nearby +B.
On your route to the FINAL cache, watch for a monument celebrating the century of Ukrainian Settlement in Canada as well as the monument honoring the RT Honorable Arthur Meighen; MP for Portage 1908-1920 and Prime Minister 1920-21 and 1926.
Cache is a 600ml lock & lock initially containing FTF certificate, Mechanical pencil, log book, the Coveted Trove Chasers “treasure Chest, Trove Crawler, Alcatraz mug,engraved stone, a couple of key chains, a couple of erasers, mini cards & a RM of Portage pin.
As you leave the island you may notice the new Splash Island featuring 2 giant waterslides, a kiddie slide, tot pool, lazy river, and many other exciting amenities--this outdoor leisure water park is fun for the whole family!
