Geocache Description:

The location of the cache is in Kalmia Gardens of Coker College, Hartsville, SC. Terrain requires going down stairs and up and down somewhat hilly areas. The area is very scenic. The cache is in a tupperware container approximately 6" x 6" x 4" 196 feet above sea level. NOTE: This cache was checked and moved slightly on October 12, 2003.

This is our first cache in South Carolina and the first one placed in the Hartsville area. We also placed a cache in Austin, Texas, in October with our Texas family who maintain it.

The cache is in a plastic Tupperware type container hidden at Kalmia Gardens in Hartsville. Kalmia Gardens is an almost complete sampling of the state's vastly varying terrain, flora, and fauna contained in an extraordinary 30-acre arboretum maintained by Coker College. A microcosm of the natural state from mountains to the sea, it is open daily and is free to the public.

To start on the trek to find the cache we suggest going to coordinates 34°21.993N and 080°06.997W at elevation 238 feet above sea level. Descend the 96 stair steps to the boardwalk by Black Creek and hike the trail one-half mile east until you reach the Swamp Gnome’s overlook of the creek.

This cache was placed with the permission of the garden administration. Be sure to stop in at the main office in the home on the property and sign the guest register.

NOTE: The Swamp Gnome is a very neat. You do not need to pillage and plunder to find the cache. Please search with restraint and leave the area exactly as you find it.
