Geocache Description:

LSP permit-GW-5

We wanted to put a cache back in this area because we love the greenway and the history of the Genesee Valley Canal. The canal house is simply near the access point of the greenway, there is no need to go in. The hike is .36 one way, and the final is a 30cal ammo can.
FTF- a gold coin
The cache also contains 4 special TB's we are sending off

The greenway follows the route of the Genesee Valley Canal which was one of the major transportation routes for goods in the Genesee valley such as wheat, lumber and potash in the 1800's. In what is now the hamlet of Piffard, the canal was crossed by a stagecoach between Bath and Batavia, and in 1840 a canal house was opened on this site. It has since passed through several owners and names to the present day.
The present name of the inn comes from a beer glass-that actually stands one yard tall and holds about 40oz of beer. The origins of the "yard of ale" dates back to early 17th century England, where the yard was made not for casual drinking- but for feasts and displays of manly prowess. The goal was to consume the entire yard of ale wihtout stopping, or getting soaked with beer!
