THUNDERING HORSES CURSE Many moons ago before Boise had been settled, A small tribe of Indians lived in the desert North of the Snake. The tribe lived well on the deer and other animals that thrived in the desert. They traded furs with travelers headed west for flour and seeds for summer crops. Thundering Horse was born in the spring. He was very small at birth and stayed small through his first years. As a young boy he always dreamed of being a great hunter like his father and brothers. His father said he was too small and should stay behind making arrowheads and working in the garden. One summer the chiefs had a big meeting, The animals were getting scarce in the area and the Indians may not make it through the winter if they did not find food. They decided to send hunting parties south across the river to find more food. Thundering Horse knew of a place to the north that he had seen deer and elk in late fall. At 17 his father would still not let him join the hunting party. This ,he thought was his chance to prove he too was a mighty hunter. So like many times before after the hunting party left he jumped on his horse and went to prove he was a mighty hunter. He rode towards the small creek north of the camp. As he crested the small hill he could see a large herd of deer that had gathered near the creek. He had learned a lot about hunting from listening to the hunters stories. So he jumped off his horse and crawled the rest of the way . He drew on one large deer and hit his target. One more arrow was drawn and the second shot missed. He cleaned the deer and hurried home hoping to beat the hunting party. When he arrived back at camp he found terrible destruction. The entire camp was destroyed and all had perished. He had heard of cowboys trying to take over the desert for their cattle herds but had never seen them. The remains were scattered everywhere. As a small tribe with only weapons of stone and wood they had no chance against the guns of the white man. Thundering horse felt he should have perished with his tribe. After burying their remains,He set out to avenge his tribe. One by one he attacked the cowboys when they least expected it. He rode to the north, where he had seen the deer so he could stay near food and fresh water from the creek. When he arrived at his hunting ground he found a large herd of cattle and many white men. He decided to wait till dark and then attack. As the sun went down he watched closely and came up with a plan. He was to start a stampede and then in the confusion take the cowboys one at a time. As evening fell he attacked. The cattle started to run and the plan was going well. As the third cowboy fell Thundering horse heard a loud bang. Pain struck like lightning he had been shot in the hip. He made it back to his horse when more shots rang out. The cowboys searched for him and his horse but he was never found. As you walk around this sight you can only dream of this young Indian boy who only wanted to be a mighty hunter. And Maybe you can feel his spirit.
