Geocache Description:

Back in the 1800's the area I call home was a small area that was thriving on ship-building, fishing, and salt hay harvesting. But like any small area, it was dying to grow. LBI and the mainland had just been connected by a Causeway, and now travelers from NOrth and West needed a faster and more convenient way to get to the shore.

It was the arrival of the Tuckerton Railroad that finally changed the whole history of the area. The completion of a twenty-nine-mile track from Whiting in north-central Ocean County to Tuckerton in 1871 promised to bring thousands of vacationers into the area. The Camden and Amboy line, which crossed the state, passed through Whiting, and would bring many to the seashore for the first time. The round trip from Camden to Tuckerton cost $2.50. The Tuckerton Railroad ran from 1871 to 1935 when it was replaced by more "modern" roadways that weren't restricted by tracks.

There are very few pieces of the actual tracks left, although the trail that the tracks ran on can still be seen down a significant portion of Rt. 9. Come and see a quickly disappearing piece of history.

You seek a large cylindrical-shaped container in the usual green garb hidden in the usual way. Not a lot of stealth needed here as you'll be in the woods a bit (down an easily walked dirt trail). If you need a hint the clue is a dead giveaway. Safe parking along the roadway, you'll know you found the trailhead when you see the Tuckerton Railroad sign. If you have four-wheel drive and don't value your paintjob you can drive right to the cache site. The cache is positively loaded with goodies, please remember to trade up or even or not at all. May be some ticks down here, but you don't have to leave the trail and it's not overgrown.
