BGGT 11: Alaska's State Mammal Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

Greatland Reviewer: Dear Cache Owner,

I have been going through caches that have multiple "DNF" (did not find) logs, which is often a sign that a cache is missing and because the Cache Owner has not been online since 2016. Generally cachers avoid hunting a cache with many DNF logs, so it is a good idea for the Cache Owner to check the cache and either replace it or post a log to the cache page to tell fellow geocachers that the cache is still there, but they might need new eyeglasses. No action by the Cache Owner may result in a cache being archived to keep the cache from appearing in local Pocket Queries.

Please reenable the cache page after you have maintained your cache. To reenable the cache, go to the cache from your Account page on GC.com. Under "Admin Tools" in the upper right-hand corner, click "Enable," write your note and click "Submit log entry."

Please contact me if you have any questions.

Geocache Description:

Welcome to the Blue Goose GeoTour!

Since you must fly or boat to get to nearly all of Alaska’s Refuges, we are bringing the refuges to you! The Blue Goose GeoTour (BGGT) is a series of 16 geocaches that have been hidden at 16 of the 223 Anchorage Parks. Each geocache features one of Alaska's amazing National Wildlife Refuges.

This cache features Nowitna National Wildlife Refuge. The heart of Nowitna National Wildlife Refuge is a lowland basin of forests and wetlands that forms the floodplain of the meandering Nowitna River. The Refuge's climate is typically marked by light precipitation, mild winds, long, hard winters and short, relatively warm, summers. The hills that circle the refuge lowlands are capped by alpine tundra. It takes a week in a canoe, or more than an hour in a small plane, to traverse the Refuge's 2.1 million acres of pristine wildlife habitat. Approximately 223 miles of the Nowitna River's 283-mile length flow within the boundaries of the Refuge. Fish species inhabiting the river and its related lakes and streams include sheefish, burbot, whitefish, sucker, king and chum salmon, northern pike and arctic grayling.

Prizes

Each cache contains a special First to Find (FTF) prize with up to 10 additional prizes. Caches also contain a trivia question that is answered by following a virtual clue printed on passport cards in the cache. The first 50 people to visit all 16 caches and submit your completed trivia postcard will receive a custom Alaska National Wildlife Refuges path tag. All submissions will be eligible for other fabulous prizes, but the more you caches you log, the better your chances are of winning!
