This cache is about my uncle Rodger, who was in a serious
automobile accident in 1978 that left him partially paralyzed and
in a coma for months. When he finally came to, he suffered from
mental retardation and an inability to communicate beyond an
occasional smile and grunt. He lived the next 17 years bound to a
wheelchair requiring constant care and attention which seemed like
such a waste balanced against the formidable being he once
was.
I asked my siblings what they remembered about Rodger before he was
in the accident. I was only 8 at the time, so I remember very
little about the man accept that he was, in my young perception,
the strongest man alive with hands the size of Goliath.
My oldest brother, who has seven years on me, remembers many things
about Rodger, as do my other siblings:
Oldest Brother 'He was
incredibly strong. He used to heft a pair of 8' logs that were
probably 250lbs. a piece and toss them on the saw mill with ease.
He took me hunting a few times and I remember riding on his bicycle
which was a harrowing experience. I inherited his shotgun, the one
that took two of his fingers off because it had a really lousy
safety mechanism. That same shotgun went off on me once because of
the safety and almost took of the foot of one of my friends. Right
then and there I beat that damn thing against a boulder and made
sure it could do further harm to another human being.
Oldest Sister '---to
come---'
Older Brother 'I just remember
that every time I made a summer sausage sandwich, that he'd just be
waiting for me to finish making it so he could snag it and help
himself.'
Younger Sister 'He was super
strong and could have entered a strong man competition... and won.
That he was always riding his bike which was what made his accident
even more ironic and tragic.'
Coordinates will bring you to his headstone as well as those of
his maternal grandparents, Otto and Hattie. Add Hattie's age at
death (/4)+2 to your given North cords and add Rodger's age at
death (/2) to your given West cords.
This cache is not near to any existing headstones although it is in
the cemetery proper. Please exercise due respect for those who lie
here when seeking this cache.
Rodger, you are missed...
