This is a lovely hike, either as a cardio workout or an enjoyable
family outing; children would enjoy this hike, as long as it's not
too hot.
Rattlers are common here so do be watchful.
Park in main lot for Rancho Sierra Vista/Satwiwa; turn onto
entry road from Lynn Rd at Via Goleta.
Several trails head out from the Satwiwa Visitor Center (.5 mi
from parking lot). Head S/E and you'll see the correct approach.
You will drop down into the canyon, turn right (west) near Shandi's
Cache, and after finding this one and others on this route, end at
the paved road at the bottom of a steep grade, near a bridge and
outhouse. Turn right (N/E) and hike back up the hill on the
pavement - watch out for maurading mountain bikers.
You can also go in reverse (start by hiking down the paved road
and turning left (S/E) at the outhouse/bridge) and going
up-canyon.
I thought with all the rain this year the Humboldt lilies would
be spectacular, but they were actually few and far between and
pretty puny. Blig's attached photo, however, gives them the star
quality they deserve. The scarlet larkspur, however, was
startlingly beautiful!
Sorry, neither dogs or bikes are legal.
SPOILER: Check the laurel sumac where the water carrier meets
the wood, approx 10' north of trail. Poison oak on the left (west),
cache on the right(east).
Cache includes maps of Pt Mugu SP and flower seeds
