Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions
in our disclaimer.
North Star Geocache will take you to various places on the North Shore in Vancouver, Canada. This cache will take a bit of time to complete. If you enjoy caches like Pier Pressure or any of the Team KFWB caches, you'll enjoy solving this one!
Note the rating of the terrain. This is because the final location of the cache is very rocky and may not be suitable for children.
The co-ordinates above only point to the starting position for this cache, not the physical location of the cache.
Note that this cache might require 2 or more visits to the North Shore to complete.
To log a successful find on the website you'll need to log an entry in the physical logbook at the cache. Only one successful 'find log' per person/team.
Below are various tasks that need to be performed and clues gathered at each task point. Record your answers at each point as you'll need them in calculating the final cache location. Once you've calculated the cache location the name should be obvious to you. Let me know if you figure it out.
Make sure to seal the cache properly and close the bag the way you found it. Re-hide the cache in the exact place you found it making sure to cover it up again.
Where necessary it'll indicate if you are to use UTM.
Tasks and clues to be collected:
Task 1
Go to the Lonsdale Quay in North Vancouver at approximately the following co-ordinates: N49 18.584 W123 04.942
A = What is the revolving letter? What is the number for this letter? (A=1, B=2, C=3)
B = What are the co-ordinates under the letter? (For best results go up the steps)
(For accuracy your UTM Easting should end in 30 and your Northing in 03)
C = From B go approximately 90m at +-310 degrees true. How many small domes are there?
Task 2
From B go approximately 1060m at 52.389 degrees true.
D = You should be standing on or near to an object sticking out the ground, with a distinctive shape (i.e. square, round, triangle, octoganal, etc.). How many letters in the name of this shape?
E = Looking west you should see a cenotaph. What are the co-ordinates at the centre?
(For accuracy your UTM Easting should end in 35 and your Northing in 33)
F = How many international 'no entry' signs (red cirlce with a horizontal line through the middle) are within a 50m radius from the object sticking out the ground?
G = West of you is a park. What is the name of this park? How many letters in the FULL name (i.e. all words without spaces)?
Task 3
Go to N49 19.259 W123 04.397
H = Looking East, what big stylized letter do you see? What is the number for this letter? (A=1, B=2, C=3)
Task 4
From the position in Task 3 go +-8100m at 281 degrees true
I = What is the letter in this tire company's name? What is the number for this letter? (A=1, B=2, C=3)
Task 5
Now head +-10537m at 88.574 degrees true
J = What animal would use the object you should be standing at? How many letters in that animal's name?
K = What are the co-ordinates of this object?
(For accuracy your UTM Easting should end in 56 and your Northing in 35)
Task 6
Go to N49 20.246 W123 03.020. A famous English writer's name should be obvious from where you are standing.
L = How many letters in this man's last name?
M = How many letters in this man's first name?
Task 7
N = Name the letter obvious from the company at N49 18.376 W123 02.032. What is the number for this letter? (A=1, B=2, C=3)
Task 8
Go to the parking lot at N49 22.378 W123 05.929.
O = How many dollars does it cost to purchase a yearly parking pass at this tourist attraction? Subtract $20 for the answer to this task.
You should now have 3 new sets of co-ordinates (B, E and K) and many answers. Convert all 3 sets of co-ordinates to UTM (and use a flat earth model for this section, unless otherwise specified).
Point 1 Easting = B Easting - (H x L x M x N) + 18851
Point 1 Northing = B Northing + (A x D x G x L) - 2189
Point 2 Easting = E Easting - (A x C x G) + 35
Point 2 Northing = E Northing + (C x I x N x O) + 3095
Point 3 Easting = K Easting - (D x I) - (F x J) + O + 2
Point 3 Northing = K Northing - (F x H x J x M) + 903
Point 4 Easting = Point 1 Easting + 5000
Point 4 Northing = Point 3 Northing - 4000
Point 5 Easting = Point 1 Easting - 3000
Point 5 Northing = Point 3 Northing + 2000
As a check, the last 3 digits of all the Northings should be the same and the last 3 digits of all the Eastings should be the same, or very close. (The closer the better/more accurate.) Also, if you add up all values of the clues collected (excluding the co-ordinates), you should come to a total of 130.
You should now have 5 points.
Connect Point 1 to Point 3 and Point 4.
Connect Point 2 to Point 4 and Point 5.
Connect Point 3 to Point 1 and Point 5.
Connect Point 4 to Point 1 and Point 2.
Connect Point 5 to Point 2 and Point 3.
You should have a shape. Let me know if you know the shape. :)
Do the following:
Where Line 3-5 intersects with Line 4-2 make this Point 6.
Where Line 4-1 intersects with Line 5-3 make this Point 7.
Connect Point 1 and 6.
Connect Point 2 and 7.
Where these 2 lines, 1-6 and 2-7, intersect you'll find the cache!
The cache container is a clear mid-sized Rubbermaid plastic container (in a white bag inside a dark coloured bag) which originally contained the following:
- Log Book and Pencil(in a ziplock bag)
- Geocache Instructions
- Mini Slinky Spring
- 2 x Golf Balls
- 1 x CD-RW
- Toy Bird
- Whistle
- $50 keyring
- Lucky Penny Keyring
Note: All coordinates have been checked several times on different days for accuracy and should be within 5m accuracy.
Remember, this is not a 5 star cache for nothing. It is difficult to do and to find.
Enjoy
