Geocache Description:

In the East Village neighborhood of New York City, on the Lower East side of Manhattan, there are still over 70 community gardens. They were created by local residents, on empty and unused city land, over the last 30 years. Today, as part of the Green Thumb program, most of these gardens are protected as NYC parks. But in order to preserve them, access is limited. This cache is part of the East Village tour of community gardens.

This is a micro cache modified to match it's surroundings in one of our better hidden neighborhood gardens: The Serenity Garden.

Please be careful, it may not seem thorny, but there are dangerous sharp edges nearby. This garden contains unique brickwork, some well landscaped niches, and wild hawks nesting up above.

The only way to see anything is to come during daylight hours.

While not technically necessary to find the cache, the absolute best time is when the gates are open. This makes caching suddenly much more enjoyable. The gates are always open on Saturday & Sunday from 1P to 4P. In good weather, there are frequent art shows and jazz concerts here. They also open at other random times, and if you find them open, please enter, you will be welcomed.

You can grab the cache at any time, but doing so at night is not suggested, as the local block association may mis-interpret your intentions. This garden also has some unique security precautions and we don't want anyone to get hurt.

We measured the coordinates very quickly, one time only, when we had an accuracy of + or - 33 feet. So you will have to rely on your urban caching experience. Even with the gate closed you can put your hand on this one, but keep your eyes open -- you will have to be watching out for something else as you feel for the cache.

As always in urban caching, the best stealth strategy is to show an interest in the local scenery. And always bring a pen.

Please carefully replace the cache exactly where you found it.

This cache is part of the East Village Garden Tour cache
