On the Narrow Gauge Pathway in Carrabassett Valley, off route 27.
Lace up your hiking boots or bring along your bicycles, this can be
a chance to get some real exercise. Or if you're in a hurry, this
can be almost, but not quite, a park and grab. The cache is located
along the Narrow Gauge Pathway in Carrabassett Valley. Take route
27 north and watch for the Campbell Field Road signs on the right,
just before the Carrabassett Outdoor Center or across from Hugs
Restaurant (there are two roads in). There you will find a nice
parking area with an outhouse. Take the 1/4 mile walk to the
trailhead, then turn right and walk for maybe another 1/4 mile. The
cache is a short way up the bank. If you want more privacy take the
cache back into the woods a bit. You may see nobody on the trail or
it could be busy. But don't stop there! A bit farther on there is a
nice view of the river, a camp called Riverside 1900, and beyond
that a wooden bridge over a bog. Or go all the way to the end. It's
5 miles from the trailhead to the Carrabassett Town Office. The
lower end of this trail has picnic tables and better views of the
river. Next year I plan to put a cache on that end too. This is a
30mm ammo can and to start it contains only puzzles and games. FTF
prize is a Masters of Cache geocoin for you to keep, trade or
activate. For information on the Narrow Gauge Pathway and its
history go to
http://www.carrabassettvalley.org/attractions/narrowgauge.asp. No
motorized use is permitted but you can bring dogs, wheelchairs,
bicycles or in the winter, cross-country skiis.
