Geocache Description:

This is a quick multi in Prescott's Mercord Park. While here, take a walk along the river and notice the color of the water at the confluence of the rivers. You will notice that the water from the Mississippi is brown and muddy, and the water coming into the Mississippi from the St Croix is sparkling blue.

Mercord Park is at the confluence of two great rivers, as well as at the confluence of historical travel methods. The Wisconsin Great River Road starts here, and heads south from here all the way to Illinois.

But before cars, were the trains, and you get a great view of the train bridge across the river here. And before the trains, there were the steamboats, which led to Prescott becoming a city and the area's early boom period before the trains came.

A young attorney by the name of Lincoln was here, involved in litigation between the steam boat interests and the rail interests, working on the side of the rail interests. And General U. S. Grant visited this site as well.

At the posted coordinates, you will find a historical marker. Use the information on the sign to find the cache in Mercord Park.

The final is at

44.44.ABC
92.48.DEF

A = The number of warehouses and flour mills once near here (not one)
B = Fourth digit of year that this area became a center of steamboat activity.
C = Fourth digit of year that marked the decline of steamboat importance.
D = 1
E = Number of blocks in the business section here.
F = Fourth digit of the year U. S. Grant visited this site.

While here take a look at the nearby Prescott Bridge Gearhouse, which is located near the historical sign. The Gearhouse is located on Prescott's waterfront at the confluence of the St. Croix and Mississippi Rivers. The Gearhouse was originally built on top of the 1923 vertical lift bridge spanning the St. Croix River at Prescott and it housed controls for raising and lowering the bridge. The original machinery can he viewed by the public in this restored building.

Please note that there is no need to go anywhere near the train tracks to find this cache.
