Location:- This Earthcache is located in the Schmiedebach River valley between the Austrian foothills and Bodensee. To access it you should prepare yourself like a geologist with maps, appropriate clothing and footwear (good strong hiking boots), GPS and compass. This location is NOT RECOMMENDED for infirm, aged or children and is probably best suited for summer-time visits. It is recommended that access be made via a footpath from Oberbad Strasse immediately north of Point 1 (the posted coordinates).

Geology:
The river cuts through a sequence of sandstones siltstones and mudstones of the Deutenhausen beds. These rocks were laid down as sediments in a marine or possibly a deep lake (lacustrine) environment. They are early Tertiary in age (late Eocene to early Oligocene, about 35 million years). They represent the early basin fill of the North Alpine foreland basin and are about 500 metres thick. Close inspection of the bed forms and bedding planes reveal a number of soft sediment deformation features and sole marks /tool marks such as shown in the photograph. The arrow shows the original direction of sediment source.

These sedimentary features are formed on the bottom of bedding planes and are therefore important indicators of the bed attitudes (way up). Although originally deposited as flat lying beds they are now standing close to vertical and strike about east-west. Field geologists would record these dips as 70-80 degrees towards an azimuth of 180-190 degrees. Beds with sole marks still on the under surface are described as 'normal' whilst beds with the sole marks exposed on the upper surface are described as "inverted" or "overturned".

To appreciate the forces of nature it is suggested you walk downstream from Point 1 to Point 2: Latitude 47°25'39.15"N Longitude 9°54'50.18"E

Along the way you will observe varying ratios of sandstone and mudstone (indicating the variability in the environment of deposition), numerous sedimentological / structural way-up criteria and some very pretty river bed scenery. The structural geology is quite simple but you should carefully check the way-up of each outcrop as you traverse the section.

EarthCache:
To log this Earthcache you are required to describe the structural geology of the entire section (dip strike, way up).

Danke sehr.
