About the Series
The Greater Palmer Fall Foliage Tour is a collection of four
caches: a
traditional cache (Fox Hill, Palmer), a
multi cache (Devil's Peak, West Warren), a
letterbox hybrid (Mt. Dumplin, Palmer), and a
puzzle cache (Swift River, Belchertown). You will need to track
down the first three caches and collect some numbers from them to
find the puzzle cache. If you are First to Find on the puzzle
cache, you will become the proud owner of an unactivated 2007 Podcacher
Geocoin
This series could be subtitled "Revenge of Dosido's Muggled
Caches" as the 4 locations have all held caches that we placed, and
were subsequently muggled.
As fall is my favorite season, all of these locations are
fantastic spots to view and enjoy the fantastic colors of New
England!
The Multi Cache
This cache is atop Devil's Peak in West Warren, and is a fun hike
on 4WD trails. Of course, it's also a great place to view the fall
foliage! This is a 3 stage multi ending with a .30 cal ammo can
which Alexa stocked with stuff that's fun for kids!
The beaver dam near the beginning has been broken up, so the
water is down several feet from where it used to be, negating the
need to traverse the long beaver dam.
The Muggle Story
Our original
Devil's Cache was atop Devil's Peak, but dphansen let us know
that when he found it, he noted that in the log book was
written:
"This is what happens when you mess with
someone's fun. I had to destroy this. Ha ha. signed,
M.M.M..."
dphansen had collected what he could find of the cache and
re-hid it. We then went up to the top, picked up our cache and
remaining contents, which had been burned, and then found one or
two items strewn in the woods. Unfortunately, we lost the two
travel bugs during the tussle.
Cache Info
This 3 stage multi cache is different than most. The first two
stages are very kid friendly, and were meant to be found by the
kids. The first is a small lock-n-lock painted green, and is a
trade stop - this one was placed by Alexa, and contains only
bracelets for trading. Please try and stick to the theme!
The second stage is a large screw-top vitamin container painted
green, and is also a trade stop - this one was placed by Will and
contains only matchbox type cars. Both stages are less than 5 or 6
feet off the trail, and should be obvious to the seasoned cacher,
but fun for the kids to find on the way up. The final stage is the
smaller type .30 cal ammo can, and is very close to the northern
view, but you should be hidden from muggle view when searching for
the cache. The final location might be difficult for the smaller
kids to get to, but they'll be busy checking out the view
anyway!
As are all of these hides, this one is full of stuff for the
kids. The 1 mile round trip hike was done easily my 3 and 6 year
olds, and they had a blast hiding the various stages of the
multi.
There is an unactivated benchmark micro geocoin for the First to
Find.
Please rehide well, and bring a CITO bag, as the high school
kids obviously come up here often, and don't seem to know how to
carry their trash back down the hill.
Approach the parking coordinates on Smith Rd. from Gilbert,
Smith Rd. is not open from the south end, despite many maps showing
that it is open.
Thanks to Xiadog, who couldn't be with us when hiding the cache,
but was generous enough to provide the kids the cache containers
that they used for their stages.
Hints for stages 2 and 3 as well as info for the mystery cache
are posted inside the cache containers.
Good Luck!
Remember that hunting season starts soon - wear your blaze
orange when out caching!
