Mississippi River CITO Event

Mississippi River Cache in Trash Out Event

August 21, 2010
9:00 - 12:00

Let’s Cache In Trash Out with the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area! This local park is undergoing a dramatic transformation as non native plants are removed allowing native plants to re-establish. Let’s keep the momentum going! This site sports a restored native prairie, floodplain forest, wetlands, riverfront and miles of trails. However, the non-native buckthorn tree, arguably one of the worst trash trees, has invaded the forest here and threatens to take over. Site managers have cut down the trees, and our focus today will be removing this woody trash and debris from the forest. Help us take the trash trees out!

Parking: Leave all valuables at home or lock in your trunk before arriving. Parking lot available.

Check In: Look for the uniformed National Park Service volunteer leaders.

Activity: We will be working in a forested area off of a paved trail in the park. We will be hauling pre-cut buckthorn trunks and branches out of the forested area and stacking them on the paved lots for later removal.

What to Bring: Bring a full water bottle for drinking (Green tip: a reusable container is better for the environment than plastic water bottles). If you are allergic to bee stings, are diabetic or have other special medical needs, please bring the necessary supplies and notify the leader. We do carry a first aid kit and are within easy access of major thoroughfares. Volunteers may want to bring their own sun screen, sun glasses, mosquito/tick repellant. The National Park Service and our partners will provide leather gloves and tools.

What to Wear: Wear long pants and sturdy boots or shoes.Volunteers are encouraged to bring a lightweight, long sleeve shirt to protect against sunburn, bug bites, and minor scratches. Volunteers can bring their own gloves (leather) or wear ones that are provided for their use that day.

Rain or Shine: Due to the preparation work involved, the National Park Service operates under a rain or shine policy. However, we will not do a program when lightning or other severe weather is in effect.
