Chief Logan's Stash

Log Cabin Your journey begins in Chief Logan State Park near Logan, West Virginia.

This park was named after a chief of the local Cayuga Tribe (also known as the Mingo Tribe.) Another tidbit of history is that the area comprising the park was mined by Merrill Coal Company from 1921 through the late 1950's. The Chief Logan Recreation Area opened in 1961, and later became a state park in 1969.

This cache is a three part multi-cache consisting of some research, two micro-caches and a final cache, housed in a 50 cal. ammo box. Bring a pencil and paper to record needed info to find the final cache. Some of the terrain is MODERATELY steep, but follows mostly developed trails. In addition to your GPSr, you will need a compass. On your trek, you'll experience some unforgettable views of the park. Put on your boots, start walking and enjoy! You can pick up a trail map at the park office (N37° 53.830' W82° 00.080'), or print one for yourself from: http://www.chiefloganstatepark.com/chieflogan.pdf

Now, on to a little research. Determine the correct numbers for A and B. Locate the steam locomotive in the park. Note the engine's weight and convert to tons (A) and the build year (B).

Proceed to the log cabin at N37° 53.252' W082° 00.897' (These are the listed coordinates.) From the bottom of the front steps, the first clue lies (A ÷ 2 − 20) feet away on a 60° magnetic bearing. At this point, you will receive instructions how to locate the second micro. At the second micro, you will be provided with the remaining clues for the final cache.

Please treat the instructions in these micro-caches with care, otherwise the final cache can never be found by others. Also be careful not to leave obvious paths to the caches. Good luck and enjoy the fun. Allow about 3 to 4 hours to complete. This cache is well suited for children who enjoy hiking. It's doggy friendly, too. Avoid the urge to bushwhack; trails will lead the way. Be sure to carry water. You no doubt will need it, especially on a hot day.

This one started out easy enough. Pilot did the initial math and then we stepped our way to Stage 1. Clue tried to mislead us, but with a previous finder observing the hunt, we weren't going to be humiliated by a DNF. WVAngler went with geosense and made the find. Very nice hide not likely to get muggled. Got some great pixs, but, sorry, can not share. Then off we were for the next stage and then on to the final. Now that was quite the hike and a lot of water was consumed and a lot of ticks removed. While watching our clothes for ticks we were lucky to spot Turtle #4 and WVAngler found a neat white arrow head which he generously shared with the Pilot - a collection of one. This hike made the Crew doubt she was going to complete the challenge today, but she hung in and made the final climb and was almost standing on the ammo can when the Pilot spotted it, very well cammoed by Mother Nature. Wow, this was a memorable cache. Found the first stage without too much of a hitch. Tricky! I misinterpreted the hint though and thought it meant opposite of what it was telling me. Second stage was pretty easy. Third stage, well, wow. Nice hike indeed. After a couple miles of hoofing it uphill the Pilot says "we are no closer to the cache now than when we started at the bottom...thanks for the encouraging words! Actually though, I was looking at my GPSr all the way up and was noticing the same thing. Finally crested the mountain though and made the fun level hike out to gz. What a fun trail! Along the way we stopped for a breather and I happened to look down at the ground and guess what was laying there on the path between my feet?...just like a beacon a white flint Indian arrowhead was laying right on top of the ground!!! WOW, now that was cool! The only other arrow head I've ever found before was above Clendenin in Kanawha County. Also saw two box turtles side by side in the trail. That was another odd sight! I'm assuming they were a mating pair.

TFTC...but most importantly TFTJourney! Now off to FTF Chief Logan's Challenge!

I did the math and came up with the distance from the steps but couldn't find the first cache. We were there for about an hour and gave up. I'll be back to find this one!
